Pre-hunt Hatasan 95 purchase

Got up at 5am to go hunting out in Blanco TX last Thursday at my friends place.  Hunt was unfruitful, usually the edge of the property which boarders a pecan orchard is pretty fruitful but I didnt see a single squirrel. Was able to sneak up on a group of 10 toms but sneezed courtesy the cedar about 15m.  Upside the weather was nice and I enjoyed the time out.

Before going out though I checked ebay and saw a nicely wooded Hatsan 95 and bit. If Id had my coffee b4 checking ebay I'd probably have passed.  Wife found out about it thru that darn USPS Informed delivery.

Got an upset wife but won the wood lottery lol. It needs some work, there are sanding marks all over and pressure dents.  The original  owner also had cut the stock down so it was repaired by the guy I bought it from.  Overall happy wth the purchase, few problems but good problems to have. 

Took a few shots with it and the cycle is pretty nice. Trigger has a little bit of creep but not much. Any pellet recommendations for .177?

All I can say is wow! I thought my model 95 was nice. Sorry can't comment on pellets haven't shot it for so long can't remember what it likes. Try the old standards: JSB AA and Crosman domes. Light and heavys. Dave

   That is pretty. I only shoot one .177, & that is a Gamo. It does very well with Winchester pellets from Tractor Supply.

 Nice ! I would try 10.34 gr. JSB or Air Arms, possibly JSB 13.43 gr. anything lighter may not shoot so well, Crosman domed 10.xx for plinking and such.

Ya blew my mind. Id have called Hatsan and ordered a new stock or bought another one.

Ive got most the pellets mentioned and some other heavy ones that my D48 had liked.

He said it was just sanded down and he used 6 coats of truoil. Someone didnt do a great job of sanding between  grits though. There are scratches under the finish all over.  But the guy I bought it from did a really good job laying the truoil evenly. No runs, nibs or streaks.

Im debating on using some alkanet root and the a similar blend to truoil when I refinish it.

I used alkanet root powder in BLO for this gun, then finished off with Tru-oil.  I burnished the red oil in with chamois cloth, the way they do at Purdey

It was WAY darker than what you see below.  It tends to lighten in color after a few weeks.  You could barely see the tiger stripes in the forearm area of the stock until it lightened up a bit with time.

I now prefer Minwax antique oil finish over the tru-oil.  Harder finish, and I think easier to use, just following directions on the can.

I should have mentioned, in that video about Purdey above, the part about the red oil is in the last 5 or 10 minutes of the hour and a half long video.  Very fascinating video, though.  Fun to watch the whole thing.

I need to sit down and watch the whole video. Definitely something Ill enjoy seeing.

Maybe Ill do a very light alkanet application, I think the forearm should still show the stripes well but the buttstock is darker.  I used alknet  on a Sheridan BS and a walnut stocked BSA Scorpion. Probably looked best on Scorpion.

  Ive not tried Miniwax's antique finish. I may pick some up and test it. Easy learning curve and a durable finish is probably the best of both worlds. Ive done pure tung oil and turpentine, that took me a while to get down right. Even though I can now, it takes too long lol.

I refinished my Hatsan 135 stock with varnish made from bee propolis then coated that with Truoil.

I didn't do a great job, There's runs in the finish from the Truoil. The bee propolis though really brought out the holographic effect of the flames that walnut has.

Runs in Tru-oil will easily sand out, then just rub a little more tru-oil in that area to refinish.  Very thin coat, only needed where you sanded.  Run your finger back and forth until there is no excess to spread. That way it blends in with what's already there.  If you applied it that way to the whole gun you wouldn't have had any runs.
