RWS 34 pro eating scopes

My redheaded step son rifle the 12 land 34 Pro Compact has ate 2 scopes.

First it killed a Leapers 3-9x32AO 2011 production mounted in the RWS Droop lock down mount.  I have never broke one of them before this one broke the reticule is less that 50 shots.

Backup plan installed RWS 3-9x40AO that came with it...Now it too has a failure it has lost its ability to focus on any power or AO setting....reticule is still focused

I have used powder to check breech oring no puff of powder etc or air felt.

any suggestions?  bad luck on scopes or is it the rifles fault?

Just bad scopes would be my guess. I have two of the rws 3-9x40AO scopes. One on a GRT tuned 34 .22 @ 16.5 FPE. Has about 500 shots on that scope. The other in on my 34 Pro. Scope had around 1000 shots on it before I detuned the pro to 12 FPE.

The recoil on 34's shouldn't be hard enough to be eating scopes like that.  I'd say the scopes were bad.

My experience with RWS "magnum" rifles is... they are scope killers. Model 34, model 48, etc. all have broken the best of scopes, all scopes were so-called AG rated.

Your scopes could have been "marginal" but... as a comparative, my R9 and HW97K have never killed scopes, both with 1000's of rounds thru them. It's not just the recoil, although that is the primary factor, it is also frequency or vibration at a specific frequency or harmonic.

We test for similar issues at my work for missile & defense parts and the shock wave transmission thru metals is amazingly powerful stuff.

My 34 killed 2 scoped before I installed the Vortek in it. Now so far good but only about 150 shots so far.

My guess would be the the rings are to close to the bell end &/or adjustment towers.. Some scopes are finicky about how they are mounted. Also, are you sure the scope isn't moving? If it moves forward, its gonna move back..

Have you smooth out the spring ends?

That alone has the possibility of eating scopes, so does an undersized piston seal.

have some Vortek seals on the way.......I will take the old seal out and turn it down on my lathe and use it to see if the chamber has a loose spot by sliding it thru.....

Was going to add the kit but they are out of stock for right now

The accu shot is a fixed mount also, but will give you more room & get the rings away from the bell & turrets.  I have noticed the focus & parralax problems that mounting can cause several times. If the rings are not aligned & actually bends the scope tube you can have these type problems as well. I dont think its the seal or spring though. But thats just My opinion..

I need to buy a chunk of 1 inch drill rod and make up a lap for rings....

Right now till I investigate further I am scared to mount up another scope ....I have a Hawke HM17021 adjustable mount, some low Leapers weaver rings and a Leapers Tactedge 3-9 x 44 side AO I could try

If you are 4sure gonna get the Vortek kit, you will be replacing stuff anyway, there is a short term fix.  Cheaper than anyone could want.
Do the normal polish spring ends to a mirror finish, and lube tune whole internals.   Disassemble and polish the t05 group and add the 2nd screw ( I think you already have)  Get that adjusted to your liking.

In the meantime while waiting for Vorteks to come back in stock.......your gonna replace the seal anyway, so you'll have it torn down.....hone that cylinder if you can.   Also, put a thin polished metal washer in the piston, kinda like the washer that is basically shim stock that is on the rear guide.  Moly paste that up real good.  Shrink wrap the guide, 2 times if necessary.  I found that the first shrink wrap still didnnt get a tight enough fit, so I stretched the remaining unused wrap until it would fit over the 1x shrinkwrapped guide, and heated a second layer onto the guide.  NICE firm snug fit.   Go a little heavier on the tar, this will take your fpe down ~ 3 flbs, but makes a much smoother shot.
Cut some plastic drink bottle and make some buttons and glue them onto the piston, I put 3 in, strategically placed so they miss all the holes and the rail stuff on the inside back of the tube.   
This cheapie fix combined with a short, light adjustment with your new 2 screw t05 should have everything shooting nicely.  The extra tar will save that scope.

No hurry Dave ....let me know when you get a fill hose and when you come to get that tank to borrow......you can bring them then....still without wheels here 18 days after claim and still waiting to see if they will total it or repair it

It would drive me nutz to have a new rifle and be unable to use it for lack of air supply

I'd have to agree with Jeff as my 34P is shooting 726 and the leapers on her is rock solid.I also had an RWS on her for a bit too,NP,,then my Hawke was bullet proof too.
Now if your stock I can see it with a bit of recoil,,,but no near enough to break a Leapers or a RWS,(Unless they were already shook).

I've got an idea! You've been through so much with the MPC...replacing it, scopes, dovetails...more frustration than a 'bad group day'. Why don't you give yourself an early birthday present and send the gun to John in PA. He runs a spa for poorly behaved airguns. He will give them elocution lessons on etiquette and good 'group' activities....teach them to be quiet and to stick to the point (of impact). Den

I did send a M34 to John in PA, had to send it for its' misbehavior. While in school it would get DETENTION time 6 day's a week but only went 5 days to school, figure that one out??

Or send it to Cesar Milan the dog whisperer and an attitude change will happen.

The M34 is NOT a scope eater at 16 F/P it is a &%%$&* cat and not a PIT BULL like the M350.

Check your mount first because your air rifle recoil will transfer ALL THE WAY to your scope.

BUZZZZZZ is a given proposition, TWANGGG is produced by the spring, THOKKK is inevitable, THUNKKK is the brother of TWANGG.

and if all of this does not work, then SELL IT!!!!! and let someone else deal with this problem.

I marked the scope tube to rings with silver sharpie, mount to rail with silver sharpie, rail to compression tube with silver sharpie.  None of the marks are misaligned from each other.  I hope its not another rail sarting to bust loose.....could it be as simple as 2 border line Leapers scopes and the RWS failure was started by the loose rail on the first rifle?
