The R9.20 cal is a good choice and also the RWS34 that you mentioned. I have had the pleasure to tune and shoot R9's and would make for a good hunter. I have the RWS34 Panther with the shortened barrel and is also a proven hunter with Bandit's under it's belt. Ed

Brother Edward. You know all of the rifles that have been mentioned will serve to knock those squirrels out of those pecan trees. Or Beech or Hickory or Oak trees for that matter. Since you are looking for a "hunter" air rifle, my humble suggestion would be to forget about the so called negative factors associated with some air rifle choices such as 1) too heavy to carry around all day,2) too hard to cock,3)too slow to reload for follow up shots and any others you can think of such as 4) stock is too pretty to risk walking around in the brush. The reason I say this is because none of those factors really has anything to do with whether or not the rifle will be a good choice for the task of hunting. The #1 factor that should be considered when choosing a "squirrel getter" is whether or not you can count on the rifle and pellet choice to hit very close to where you are aiming when you do finally get a shot opportunity. You may not realize it but your TX200 will serve you just fine in the squirrel woods. That's in spite of any negatives such as weight or underlever cocking.The objections that a gun is too heavy for carrying is in my view way overblown. You aren't climbing mountains and hunting sheep or goats after all where rifle weight really is a consideration. Squirrel hunting for the most part is a sedentary endeavor. Most of the time you are going to be sitting and watching the tree tops for movement waiting patiently for that moment when you can finally press a trigger and send a small chunk of lead to a spot on the target where it will do the most good. What really matters for the air rifle squirrel hunter is your calm ability to not get rattled and shoot too soon when the squirrel is visible but still not offering the "best" shot. Squirrel hunting really hasn't changed much since the pilgrims arrival. It's still all about patience and shot selection and that is double or triple true when you accept the tougher challenge of using an air rifle. Buy another rifle or two or three if you like but...your TX has all the accuracy and power you need to kill every squirrel you shoot at if you can make the shot. If you want more squirrels, invest your money in a decent pair of boots, camo cover ups, a shooting stick that will let you sit and aim into the tree tops without getting tired, and a lightweight stool or chair with a carry strap. I like to carry a small bag with a thermos of coffee, some water and a snack and a lightweight binocular and any other "creature comforts" that will let me be comfortable while I mostly wait and watch. I have to say this is spot on! I use all my AG's for hunting! from my $2,700 Theoben Rapid to my AA Pro Sport and everything in between! airguns are tools! ment to be used and I won't buy something unless it can be used for what I want it to be used for and I hunt! I do respect what I have but I also use what I have and if I only had a TX 200 to go out into the woods with and hunt with I wouldn't give it a second thought! especially if your confident with it to take game IMO you couldn't ask for a better rifle!

I would have to say the 350 magnum with a Vortek kit as Tom sent me a new Kit as my old one must have been,,Just one of those things.My 2nd and not necessarily 2nd in choice would be the HW97K,,as they are a Real Nice rifle.

Here is another gun I would concider as an excellent hunter! its a Cometa Fenix 400 Compact Star with a Fusion Stock on it, it's very light weight, and shoots 18ftlbs in .22cal it's quiet and accurate easy to cock and has an excellent trigger! it's a very reliable gun!

I Know these are very nice guns! I have about 18 AG's left out of about a 100 I've had over the years, Ive kept my Theobens, HW's and Air Arms rifles and UK Webleys and this is the last of my 3 Cometas I had, these gun are very good in .22cal! The Cometa as a whole has a better balance of weight and power than any of the other AG's I've had for a hunting gun! way more power than a 34 or an R9 in .22cal and they are very easy to handle and carry in the woods all day!

Nice,I can't understand why they have them capped here at 495 fps! I have the license to buy what I want and all I see is 495 everywhere I look! One of those would look good in Airgun Alley,lol.

I know what you mean.... D&L Air guns just toys with us... But specialty shooting sports has the cometa logo up but no products yet.. keeping fingers crossed.

I hunt nutters with my HW85 (R9 with a longer-R1 length-barrel). It's a .177 and every time I aim it at a nutter, I get a dead nutter.
The R9 is a very accurate air gun. I need to go ahead and tune mine (that means I WANT to tune it). It's my go-to springer for nutters.
It's easy to cock, easy to shoot, and accurate to a fault.
My .22 B40 (Chinese TC200 copy) is a good one, too. I get 735 fps with RWS Superdomes and it's quiet and accurate. The R9 is an easier gun to carry in the field, though.
I don't think you'd regret getting an R9 in either caliber. Mine drops squirrels just as fast as my .22 B40. Headshots are headshots, regardless of caliber.
Lately, I've been using my .22 cal Benjamin Marauder for most of my nutter hunting, because it's a quiet, accurate, hard hitting 10 shot PCP.

I have shot nutters that are the big freakin grey ones, allot of meat on those suckers to, great for making stew, but anyways I have used my titan .22 nitro piston most of the time with a Charlie trigger and a 3x9 scope, it shoots cphp pellets 5 into one ragged hole at 20-25 yrds at 730 fps. Out to 35 yrds it drops them immediately even with a chest shot. So don’t think you have to buy some super magnum to hunt nutters, rabbits are even easier I think than squirrels are to drop but the range with rabbits can be long, they are curious little suckers and you have to stock them good to get close. My Walther Falcon Hunter in .25 cal. just about blows them 6 to 8 feet off the tree with a body shot, and its way to much for squirrels I think, but great for long range shots on them or rabbits. Heak ive even taken nutters with my b2-2a in .22 cal. and 4x scope under 25 yrds.

I will pick R9, 50 fps isn't that important. I prefer lighter, shorter and less recoil, which means accurate.

My favorite hunter is my Ruger Blackhawk. I actually prefer it over my magnums; don't know why, it is just a better behaved and great feeling rifle. The thing is deadly accurate, tears squirrels up something terrible and never fails. Even dropped a full grown possum dead in it's tracks with 1 shot. I would not be afraid to nail a coyote in the head and am positive it would be a 1 shot kill.

The Blackhawk can be had from Pyramyd for about $110 including shipping. Since it is an absolute clone of the RWS34, you can get a vortex kit installed and increase it's velocity (if you really need more) and smooth it out a bit.

You couldn't go wrong with it!

Since you want light(er) weight, I think you'll need to disqualify the R-1/HW-80. Pyramyd lists the R-1 as 1.5 lbs heavier (8.8 vs 7.3) than the R-9. Also the R-1 is about $150 bucks more too. But that extra weight could help tame it a little and make it not so "jumpy". That $150 saving would pay for (part of) a tune or a Vortek kit for the R-9. If I were to get the R-9, I would get the .177. More selection of pellets and they cost less. If I went for the R-1, I would go for .20 or .22 (.22 being my 1st choice) to better make use of the powerplant. One rifle to look at, is the R-1 carbine. It would be shorter, lighter and more manageable than the full size version. They are hard to find, but they're out there. You mentioned the M34 Pro Compact. You could get one, pay for a full monty tune and still probably pay less than the price of a new stock R-9. If you check the classifieds, good deals do come up on the R-9 from time to time.

IMO the only way to have an R1 is in the carbine version and as said the .20 or .22cal is the best in this gun! I like them better in .22cal here's a side by side of my Beeman R9 and R1 carbine I also have a HW80 that has been chopped to 14'' and it the best handling gun of them all and it feels like your holding an R9 and it weigh's 8lbs unscoped!
