Only thing I have done differently is I switched from RP to Chemlube.. .. Probably has nothing to do with it. I had about 18 hours on it using RP and under 1 hour with chemlube and when I had it open to replace the gaskets a while back it was in pristine condition with the Rp. It had about 10 hours on it after I replaced the gaskets with RP. I'll crack it open again and see what happened. But I'm sure it's just a coincidence that I just switched over to the better lube less than an hour before it died.. If you got Chemlube 751 or Nuvair 751 you know it was not the oil , that is a fact .... we have to many running it now that are showing a big improvement over royal purple and the like .... like so many other's the damage was more than likely helped/caused by royal purple since it is not designed to run in this application .... put the new parts in it , and then start running the 751 is what I would do then you start off new not dieseling up the second stage ... If you read the first part, you saw that I had it apart using the RP to put a gasket in and found no problems at all after many hours of use. It was only after putting the 751 for less than an hour that this happened.

Dan, is there any one "spec" that stands out as a prime indicator of a lubricant's propensity to detonate in the YH? That is, a go/no-go flag? There's too many "specs" to juggle. Boil it down and make it simple enough for us cavemen dummies.
JeffThat cant be done. The truth is that there has been a lot of failures regardless of what oil has been used. People have got to except that these things are a ticking time bombs with their sketchy design and engineering. Its not a matter of if they are going to fail its when.I have had mine now for about 3 years and use it once or twice weekly to fill up a small 90cui bottle without a hint of trouble.Am i using the best oil? Who knows!! I have heard of failures with the oil I use.Just for the record I use A.V. hp compressor oil with water wetter and a pond pump and larger dia. hoses. Is that the reason mine has not failed yet? I doubt it !! I just got a good one with tight tolerances.

At a much reduced life span my friend! The water jacket does not have to be removed and sprayed. Simply use a touch of anti freeze that is designed to prevent corrosion in alu. engines or cylinder heads That's all. Do run it a few minutes with all bleeds open to clear any condensate from the cylinders. I so wish people would not give advice as fact when they simply do not really know hat they are talking about. another poster stated that the Mobil Rarus and he other hp oils are all the same Well, they are NOT! Mobil Rarus 827 is the longest period interval and run time in industrial hp compressor oil available. It is however not dive rated. Chem lube, (Coltri and Nuvair) is. So obviously, not the same at all. More bad advice born out of ignorance. this is starting to bug me! And yes, I'm using such childish language to express it as the GTA won't allow me to really day what I am feeling. GRRRRRR!!!!If you don't know what your talking about, don't give advice to members as fact. Please!!! I'm going to go and kick some grass now.
When I was looking for an oil to use in mine I was looking at three factors, viscosity, full synthetic, and flashpoint. I also sometimes wonder if some of the failures I've read about have been due to overfilling the crankcase. If too much oil makes its way up into the second stage (more than is required to just keep it lubricated), The excess oil could pool on top of the second stage piston and cannot be compressed like air and could likely cause a piston failure.

More carbon than I have ever seen. Top of the piston sheered off and the cylinder walls are ruined. This is after less that an hour using it. So.. back to Royal Purple for me if I decide to rebuild this thing.

The brass should not have scored the cylinder walls, they are steel. All you should need is one of these.https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000619417179.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.28d33c0015Lt3y&mp=1
