Anyone else shoot in the dark?

Love shooting at night.  Early in the morning the wind is nil, and the neighbors are asleep.  Even so I have to stealth shoot, so I am using a ZebraLight headlamp laid on the ground in front of the target.  I tape the lense up with electricians tape to produce a small aperture that only lights up about a 4" x 4" center on the target.  Pretty sure somebody getting up to pee is going to see me walking across the yard with my other ZebraLight headlamp on at 4am and call the police.  The jig will be up then.  But mornings, before daylight, that is a special time for me.  Here is what it looks like at 100 yards.  This, me really gambling on getting caught:  shooting right after dark, lighting up two Nuthin' under a Hundred targets side by side at 100 yards.  The second ZebraLight is on the bench.

Yep... we have a lighted outdoor range. Sometimes we shoot well into the morning.

Yep, I find my most challenging shooting is after dark!

Interesting to read about everyone’s night time shooting.

My wife thinks I’m crazy to be out there in the dark , but it’s really the only time for me to get trigger time in.

My daughter who is almost 1 year old is the main priority through out the day until she goes to bed around 8pm.

To me shooting is the best way to wind down after a long busy day. Popping a few bottle caps and cans is very relaxing. Also love when I can pop a dove or 2. My dobies love them.

My range is only 20yds but have put a flashlight on my target box at night!

I do similar but I use one of those battery powered LED rechargeable Craftsman lights that I got from Lowes. Works great. I have another fully charged in case my enthusiasm exceeds the battery's

Vance, you are prepared! My 18650 flashlight on candle mode goes for like 20 hours so unless the battery is low I’m good.

I use florescent targets along with a black light and an illuminated scope.  Shoot N see targets work great!  I can illuminate them up to 30 yards away using a 75 watt black light.  I have also shot armadillo and rabbit at night by holding a powerful (250 lumens) tactical light under the forearm with my support hand.  The flash backlights the pellet as it flies and you can see the reflection of the base of the pellet.  You can follow the pellet in flight just like tracer.  This was how I discovered that certain pellets from my RIM spiral in flight.

Ever been to a candle shoot?  After dark, no lights but the candle.  Shoot the flame off the candle without hitting the candle.  You have to silhouette your sight against the candle flame. My daughter in law did it once last summer, I did it 3 times and my son is still being ridiculed around the dinner table for his lack of hits.  Tapers or birthday candles work the best because the flame is easier to see than a pillar candle.  Second tip, it’s best not to let your wife see one of her candle holders down range because her priority’s for the candle holder may be different.

Jacob, this might be of interest to you. Trenier has a set of 30mm/dovetail rings with picatinny rails on the top half for $3.99! I bought a set and they look good.  Mount a flashlight to that and no need for lights at the target, that's how I do it.

When I was young I used to hunt rabbits at night with my pellet gun when it snowed or there was snow on the ground, you did not really need a light because they stood out in the snow though sometimes I tied a flashlight to the barrel to help.  I would use white out and put dots on the sites so I could line them up at night.  I really enjoyed hunting at night in the snow and would look forward to when it would snow.

I do quite often. I find the spotlight quite helpful in allowing me to watch the pellets trajectory at long distances. Also it seems like there’s less wind at night.

Just finished a shooting session in the dark. Got the new Tasco scope, on the Trail NP2, sighted in at 30yd. Just a simple flashlight on a rubber mulch filled 5gal bucket.

The idea of the candle shoot intrigues me. How do you think your son and daughter in law would react to you setting up the trick birthday candles.

Yep quite often! Alot of times, especially in winter I run out of daylight before I'm done working so that's my only option. I dont mind though and somewhat prefer it, no sun to give scope glares, cooler(summertime) and somewhat relaxing.

I'm known to on occasion take a few liberty's with the rules of certain activities. My daddy always told me that the term a "fair fight" never applied when it comes to practical jokes. Myself, I've always liked never give a sucker an even break.

Kudos and a heck of a big thank you to SteveP who pmed me and offered me a spare tactical light with barrel mount and remote pressure switch.  I predict a bad case of lead poisoning will afflict the rabbit population in my yard soon!
