Mil or Moa?...

I'm looking at a new scope.. FFP.. I've been used to calling holdover my whole life in terms of inches or feet so moa currently, makes me feel more comfortable.. What do you guys use for your pcps? And what do you guys recommend? Mil or Moa? Also, what's more prevalent In air rifle competitions? I know this subject has been beaten into the ground but from what I've read, being that we are shooting somewhat short distances Moa is less coarse and would probably be the best option for what I'll be using is for on an airgun shooting south of 200yds..

For 10x or 12x, MIL stadia spacing is fine enough for me. For 16x and up, I prefer MOA spacing.

A 6-24x50 MOA FFP scope allows me to use either 16x for Hunter or 24x for Open Divisions in field target with the same holdover dope.

Note: Since scopes do not show inches or feet, I call my holdover in DOTS, mils, or MOA, depending on the scope.

For the distances I use my PCPs, sub 100 yards, MOA works fine for me. You stated your more comfortable with imperial measurements. So stick with what you know, unless your looking to shoot out to 1000 yards, then you might want a Mil scope. Good luck, post up once you’ve made a decision on the scope.

I prefer mil but that’s because Ive pretty much always used metric because I’m Canadian EH !
Kidding aside as said previously stick with what you know. The difference between 1/4 MOA and 1/8 MOA vs the 1/10mil is where I’d put the focus . I would never buy 1/4 because it’s too coarse.

MOA gives you more points of reference.  I prefer the turrets and reticle to be marked in the same units if possible.  1/4 moa adjustments are better for me because there is less chance of accidentally stopping a full turn off during field target matches.

It looks like each hash mark on the reticle is equal to 2 moa and the turrets are 1/4 moa per click. What are your guys' thoughts on the Athlons?

The reason I did not buy an Athlon Argos, is because of the ATMR reticle is graduated in 2 MOA stadia and they are not numbered. I got the Athlon Helos which has the APLR2 reticle graduated in 1 MOA stadia with numbers.

For MOA, I'd stick with the Helos or Midas TAC. For MIL, the Argos, Helos, and Midas TAC reticles are comparable.

Pick one a learn it well.  I use mil/mil (1/10) scopes.  Ten clicks equals one mil...Easy to remember.  However, I am not a clicker for the most part, and use holdovers mainly.

I see what you guys mean. How long have you guys had your Helos scopes for? I have a 700 in .308 I'd like to stick it on too.. for hunting trips.. I'm assuming that scope would be good for all around, for the rest of my life.. I'm leaning towards buy once cry once..

I've had my Helos for about 15 month.

World WFTF match - Birmingham, England
UKHFT series, Furnace Mill - England
UKHFT series, Nomads - England
California State GP FT - Morro Bay, California
Arizona State GP FT match - Mormon Lake, Arizona
AAFTA Nationals FT - Louisiana

...plus some local matches.

It should be fine on your other PB guns as well.

The Helos has locking turrets and a lit reticle. The Midas does not, but has better glass.

I’ve had mine under three months. If you’re interested in the Helos there are lots of reviews out there. I will post up a comparison I made between my Aztec Emerald FFP and the Helos BTR FFP. Bluelineoptics gives a thorough review, check it out. It compares well to a scope 3x the price in the review.

Have you guys had a chance to play around with the vortex vipers parallax to see if they will focus down well under 50?

$400 - I don't think the turrets lock as they do on the Helos, and I have not used a Black Hound. It still looks like a good possibility:

$300 - I ordered this ACME scope when I was looking to upgrade from the Monstrum. I had one of these briefly. Quality between an Argos and Helos. Looks to come from the same factory and have same glass as the Argos and Helos. Reticle is OK but I sent it back and got the Helos instead. Customer service is OK, but was never able to get any info from them on their MIL reticle (their web site always shows wrong one):

$200 - I have also used Monstrum 6-24x50 MOA G1 scopes. Reticle is serviceable though not great (1 MOA vertical, 2 MOA horizontal, no numbers). It has locking turrets, lit reticle. Won lots of matches with one in 2018. Still works good. Currently on my TX200. Good Customer service:

I have two of these, and love them!  I too am used to MOA, and it is what I've always used.  Last I saw SWFA had them for $349, or you can get them straight from Falcon in the UK for around $400. I love the numbered reticle too.

I have got the Athlon Helos 6-24×50 with the moa APLR2 reticle.  It's clear and clean for a ballistic reticle so you can click the turret knobs or hold over based on distance and wind.  It tracks well, focuses parralax down to 10 yards (which a majority of scope's don't do), and you can not ask for a better warranty for the price.  Buy once, cry once with Athlon, or step up to the new Nightforce NX8 4-32×50 and get the "Cadillac" for an extra $1,500.00 and shed tears of joy.
