Super Slugs – Super Excited!!

Slugs.
At pellet-prices, basically.

I'm super excited!!!   


All I need now is that ONE slug groups well at 100 yards – and I will have entered Airgun Heaven. Shooter's Nirvana. Pellet Paradise (oops, make the slug paradise)

I was for ever looking for pellets with good BCs for my long-range needs – and in the end I just had to realize the TRUTH:  At 100 yards (and say 33FPE in .22cal) pellets are just a joke in comparison to a slug. If both group equally well in perfect, indoor conditions, fine –
but once you take the comparison outside, it's a different world...!


For example:
● An imperceptible breath of air (2 mph) will throw off my high-BC pellet by 3.3" (8.4cm).
The slug stays much better on course, only 1.1" (2.8cm) drift.

● A wind I can feel and see, say 5 mph, will throw my pellet in the dirt, 8.2" off (20.9cm)!
The slug only veered 2.8" (7.1cm). With just a little bit of wind correction I can hit my target.

● With a good pellet, my quarry only get the left-overs of my 33FPE muzzle energy, less than 13FPE = the flight cut down the energy to less than half.
But the slug delivers, and with authority, more than 24FPE.

● To reach out and touch 150 yards, the pellet has a meek 8FPE of energy left.
The slug carries whooping 21FPE, for a good wapppp!!    



I just bought the whole slew of .22 NSA slugs that Nick offers, some with two different head sizes:  I just know that one will shoot well out of my LW.
17.5 grain (where can you get slugs this light for your lesser powered guns?! – 17.2gr, 20.2gr!!)
20.2 grain
23.0 grain
24.8 grain
27.5 grain
28.5 grain


Too bad I have to wait a whole month until someone brings these down to Peru....!     Patience, yeah, I'll need some fast, like, right now....!

Okay Matthias, I'm sold! Been considering slugs anyway and bought some .22 Hybrids for the Avenger. But at $15 for a hundred, how long would I last?

I still need to do more testing, but the Peruvian government has executed one of the world's strictest lockdowns during Covid, so I have some fun long range shoot sessions ahead of me.


🔴 The most critical thing with slugs is IIUC their diameter has to match the barrel (the choke!).
And here again Nick's NSA slugs blaze a trail for his fellow airgunners.
Where most slug manufacturers offer us only one or two diameters (.217 and .218) —
NSA gets us FIVE diameters!.216.2165.217.2175.218

At 5 to 8 cents per shot.... 😊

This is awesome!  I think that the price of using slugs as a "staple diet" put a lot of people off.  No more excuses.

Be sure to slug the barrel you intend to shoot- it makes a difference knowing if any inaccuracy is caused by fitment of the slug in the bore.  Chokes and slugs don't "love" each other, too.

Hey Pete what do you mean by slugging the barrel? Like replacing it with a slug liner?

Think he was refering to pushing a lead slug (or a big headed pellet) down the barrel to get a good idea of the actual bore size.   Usually done like 3 times,once all the way thoughwhile feeling for a tight spot/choke....again just at the muzzle...and again just at the breech.

Fiddly little things to measure,espcially the ones with odd numbers of lands.....but you'll at least know within measurment error,what the bore really is.

(BTW: the tripple ringed/fat headed Eunjins are useful for this,even if your airgun doesn't shoot them well.)

.22's can end up anything from .216" to about .219"

Am liking the lite slugs.I'm not unhappy with the velocity and power of pellets of the same weight,really don't want MORE velocity or energy....but am interrested in the higher BC slugs offer....less wind drift and retainng the same energy farther down range.

I am thinking of finding out what slug head size shoots well in the Avenger barrel. Bamboo barbecue-sticking a slug through the barrel is a capital idea.

The Liberties, Freedom barrels are quite tight as I assume the Avenger barrels are.  You may need to use a 3/16 hardwood dowel.  I use my CF cleaning rod on my Liberty.

I just came from the NSA site, wish they had more "sample packs" in stock (sold out), don't feel like buying 400 of each head size just to try them out for fit...

 There is a company called straight shooters that offers large samplers of various pellets, but they as to date only offer the FX slugs and not in a sample pack, might be time for us to put the bug in their ear to make a full size slug sampler
 Or a great side job for an airgunner with time on their hands.

That is a great price, even cheaper than Predator Polymags! (currently out of stock at PA) I see that all the currently available .22s seem to be hollow/cup point, would anybody know whether or not they would be suitable for brain shots on game such as coyote? Not for actual targeting of that species, of course; but for a chance encounter? I do not hunt, but like to know what my capabilities are/would be.

 If I could make enough to quit my all day job, I would make it happen, even sending out a sample to anyone, is near impossible this time of year, once the snow flies then I have time when not removing that lovely white $#!%

If there are seven other members interested in the lighter 17.5gr .22 slugs (like I am, to see if my Avenger can shoot them at slightly reduced power while checking for accuracy), we could make our own sampler packs by buying all five head sizes x 400 pcs = 2000 slugs, and divvy them up at 50 pcs per head size, times 5 = 250 pcs each:

The checkout page shows total cost is $101.95 divided by 8 ppl = $12.74375 each (although short of actually pressing the Buy button, I don't know if they still add tax...)

Also...the checkout page is asking for a Discount Code - anyone happen to know one?

Or just four of us could do it for about $25 bucks apiece and get 500 slugs each, 100 per head size for testing out in our guns.

Shipping to each participant would probably add another few bucks per member...although i don't know how much it would be to Peru for Matthias...

Anyway if you are interested please sound off here and then I'll try do the math...

.218 not so much....

The other weights in . 217 are some better, some worse in my gun.

But I still need to eliminate a few factors, like maybe a bad crown.

I strongly suspect my gun has a tight choke, so I want to try the 17.5 and 20.2 in .216 and .2165.

If you guys make a collective order I'd take 200 each of those.

Shipping would be to Florida. Got a famiky member coming to Peru in the upcoming weeks.

Understood and will keep you updated if anyone else jumps in on this group buy - so what gun are you shooting through that may have a choke?

Also I was reminded the 20.2 gr NSA slugs are longer, so it may help them stabilize earlier in flight when shooting at distance.

Oops, I thought I had responded to your question, sorry, Charlie.

Diana Skyhawk .22 with JSAR's Lothar Walther barrel, Huma reg.

Due to the whimpy OEM HST spring even with the reg turned up I only get about 32FPE with heavy pellets. With slugs I get around 4FPE less than that because of the additional friction that the large bearing surfaces of the slugs cause.
