Well I did something pretty stupid today. I was driving a Kawasaki Mule across the picnic area with a volunteer in the passenger seat. I got a little tunnel vision negotiating a curb and drove right out in front of a moving truck. Failure of situational awareness. Fortunately the truck driver was on the ball and almost missed us. But not quite. He clipped the front end of the mule and sent it spinning like a top. The volunteer and I were both violently ejected. For just an instant I flashed back to my mountain biking days. Then I hit the ground. Yep. Just like my mountain biking days.Harold and I were a little scraped up but otherwise okay. The plastic front end of the Kawasaki is ripped off but the frame and suspension were undamaged so I drove it back to the shop. LE got involved and I’m at fault so I got a ticket. Fortunately the fine is insignificant and I can probably get the points droppedNow I’m at home with ice on my knee.
I post this as a cautionary tale. I'm calling it a senior moment. It is a wake-up call for me that my situational awareness and my reflexes are no longer sufficient to safeguard me from my own stupidity. Gotta start paying more attention.
I have injured my knees repeatedly over the years and yesterday's demolition derby banged up my right one good. I limped around work today with my knee wrapped in an Ace bandage. Still too swollen to wear a brace. I drove three boat tours and the younger guys took pity on me and let me go at 3:30.Years ago an acquaintance from Gabon told me that he couldn't understand Americans aversion to having gray hair. He said in his country one gets no respect until one has gray hair. He was looking forward to his hair graying.Well I finally get it. If these young fellas want to treat me like an "old guy" I'm good with that!
Yep, I've been called Sir and Mr. ever since I came south in 2013. Took a while to get used to.
