Decision time........a little help please.

I haven`t been around for a while. Did you miss me? I didn`t think so. Anyhow.

A little recent history: I bought a Daisy 901 (first Daisy in over fifty years) and can not believe what an awesome little shooter it is without even doing anything to it. Now I am considering picking up another economy pumper and can`t choose between another Daisy, the 888 or a Crosman 760. If I go with the 760 I will do the barrel replacement thing. The question then is, which way would you go. The Daisy with the rifled barrel stock or the Crosman with the barrel replaced with a rifled barrel?

 I like the looks of both guns. Price wise I end up about the same. I do like the pellet clip of the 760 and the fact it is easier to load and if everything else was even that alone might help me decide. Your comments are appreciated.

Anyhow... I think if it were me I would look around for a good used metal/metal 880.

I know people will disagree, but the modern 760 is an ugly little abomination that's less than a shell of even the 760 10 years ago.
I'd recommend the 880 which cannot he beat for $35.

I’d go with the 880 also. Light, easy to carry all day rifle and super easy to pump.
Accurate out of the box, and with a couple of simple mods to trigger and bbl..... super accurate!

For 760's, the late "90"s 760-D had a rifled barrel.
 Believe they dropped the rifling when they went to the clip..

Had a real 760 (and I say real cuz the thing that has the name on it nowadays is no 760) for a week when I was 14. Only had it a week because when our parents found out my best friend and I traded rifles because he didn't like pumping and mine was a break barrel, his parents weren't one bit happy.

Search the auctions..Ebay, Gunbroker, whichever and find one of those real, older 760's if you really want one. Never owned an 880 but lots of threads here on how good they can be made and very easily.

You might even try WTB ads in the Member Gate for either the metal/metal 880 or an older 760.

For the money the 880 is darn near impossible to beat(the new ones),but if you want something different then I would also consider a used Crosman 2100. I have one that is about a year old and it is every bit as accurate as my 880 and 901. A little easier to load but a little harder to pump.
I also agree with your opinion of the 901,it,s my favorite and the one I shoot the most.

I have a early 70`s 760, wood stock and all. I thought it was terrific as a kid until I ran into a buddy with a Sheridan. Once upon a time I thought I would fix it. Took it apart...…. Well now I know I`m not a gun smith. I have thought about having it restored and may pursue that but in the interim I would like another pellet slinger and all things considered figure I`ll buy a Daisy 880.

I would like to know though, are the barrels people use to replace the current 760 barrel solid, one piece or they sleeved?

To answer your question, 760 barrels are solid. Until you get to the 66 Powermaster. Same solid barrel with a .22 size shroud slipped over it. The 880 or 901 are great and popular Daisy's. (I prefer a nice 908 or 910 Carrera myself) but the old metal receiver 760's from the 70's are my favorites. I have my 70 760 variant one, 76 761XL rifled barrel and 77 760 variant 4. And a couple more armloads of'em to keep each other company on the racks. I even have a 760-25 25th commemorative model with the classic wood stocks. And yes, a restomodded 760-D Pumpmaster from April 98 with the bit shorter rifled barrel that did this @ 10yds with H&N 7.5gr sniper lights-

  I like restoring vintage rifles as a retirement hobby. So I can do the restoring outside/updating inside for you reasonably.

    By the way, the latest model 760's no longer use the 5 round magazines. They are now single shots. My 760 has been a pretty good shooter, and has run over 2000 pellets, maybe closer to 3000 now, with zero problems. It's good to about 7-10 yards though. BB's, forget it.

Yeah, they never did work well with BB's. I moved to the flyin' garbage cans in pretty short order. Flyin' garbage cans? WTH? Okay, for you youngin's, here's what Flyin' garbage cans are;

  They're sorta shaped like the old metal garbage cans we had back in the days of flint knives & bear skins.

    Mine runs best on probably RWS Hobbys. Followed by RWS Basics, RWS Meisterkugelns, and Crosman Premier Super Match. All are wad cutters. Most of these tine cost about a third of what I paid for the 760. My 880 has been pretty much a disappointment. When a smooth bore out shoots a rifled barrel, it ain't a good thing. For shooting time and fun per dollar, my 760 is a winner, despite being smooth bore and plastic. I even pit a TKO on the barrel from anoth airgun that is waiting for me to fix it.

I have a NOS 760-BRD that comes with the copperhead red dot laser sight. Uses the manual clips too.
