What to do with empty JSB tins
« on: February 18, 2019, 07:02:43 PM »
Have a stack of empty 15.89 and 18.13 JSB tins and was trying to figure out something to do with them. Here's what I came up with: drill a 1/4" hole through them near the rim, thread some cordage through a piece of poly tubing in the hole, fill them with rubber mulch, and hang them out as targets.

Of course the rubber mulch isn't necessary but I figured I'd try and capture the lead. Haven't shot at them yet since it's snowing today. What do you all do with your empty tins?

I reuse them for my cast bullets and pellets.... I soak them in lacquer thinner to remove the labels....

Mine go to the recycling bin. Now when those new threaded ones start coming in, I will probably reuse them for all manner of things.

I guess that's one way to use them up, and they can still go the recycle bin afterwards! :D

But don't expect that mulch to stop the pellet unless your shooting under 400fps in .177 :P

I use some for my cast bullets some for targets. After that they go in the pile to be sold as scrap.

Seen a couple of videos where folks make makeshift 'stoves' out them with some sort of wick and mineral spirits or some such.

Good timing with this. I just gave my wife a couple hundred empty tins today. She has coworkers who use them for beads and other scrapbooking piece parts. I am their hero!

i have made  a pressurized alcohol stove out of a crosman screw top tin. worked well. if you try it . burn all the lacquer off first. after my first test burn  it was sealed tight an wouldn't un screw.

I have one tin, a Crossman CPD I think, anyhow it is marked with a sharpie on top "Parts".

It holds a lot of miscellaneous parts, tools, and the like. All small parts but, I know where 'that' O ring probably is :D

I have seen a video about drilling a 1/4 inch hole thru the side and stick a length of 1/4" wooden dowel or metal rod in the hole and tape the tin closed and to the rod to resemble a lollipop and paint or adhere stickers of your choice for aim points. Use the 177 tins for small targets and the larger tins for big targets and place in the ground at desired distances.

I have pretty much done all of the above  :D

One thing I have not tried was adding rubber mulch, but that gives me the idea to fill a tin with electrical duct seal putty.

The wife doesn’t appreciate it , but I hang a few in the Christmas tree. My buddies get a kick out of seeing the look my wife’s face when they bring it up . The others I fill with misc small tools , cast ammo for out in the field hunting , or use them to holes screws and small parts when disassembling guns on my work bench.

I put them in a big cardboard box in the garage with my altoid tins because both are just too good to throw away and I know for sure that just maybe they'll be good for something someday. I think I've actually used a couple of them to store small items over the past three decades.   ::)
