These are very nice rifles, like most Crosman 1950's - 1960's guns.    But a ridiculous price, IMO.    :o

I have a 400 in ~95% condition, along with whatever the Sears model is, ~85% condition. Both late models with cast trigger housing, without the silly loaded chamber indicator. The two of them together might be worth $300 IMO.

Last time I was at Mac-1 he had a Sears model in good shape (no mag) for I think $125.

I know where I can get a first variant for $80, but without the mag. I would rate it at about 90% in appearance (one or two small rust spots on the barrel, light scratches at the butt end). Don't know about the internals but it looks in really good shape. Has oil on the cap o-ring and I have other rifles from this same collector that are in excellent shape.

How hard are these to re-seal? I have a lot of experience with Crosman 13xx's.

I was just reading through the owners manual. What is with the "back off the cap 1/8 turn, only, to release the gas in the tube"? Page two of the attachment.

Stinger, the 400 is intended to use 2 CO2 cartridges - the outer one is pierced by tightening the cap, which has to be backed off to let the gas flow - the inner one is then pierced by hammer strike,  The same scheme is used on 160 and most 600 models.  Or, you can put a used (empty) cartridge in the outer position and tighten up, running from just one cartridge in the inner position.

Crosman CO2 guns of that era had pressurized tubes.   There are (at least) two variations; one punctures the cartridge upon hammer stroke; the other had a piercing pin in the front end cap and pierces when the cap is turned in, turning the cap back 1/8 turn pressurizes the tube.

Well, you all got me going on this 400 thing, so I went and bought that $80 one that I mentioned above.

It shoots, but leaks as well. Very nice shooter and I can't believe how good the trigger feels for being such a simple design.

So now I'm looking for a seal kit. They're anywhere from $15 to $49. What would you guys/girls recommend?

gracious I sold my,good shooting 85% Cr 400 last summer for less than half that. Just goes to show that worth is a tricky slippery thing.

Exactly, I look for a good amount of time before buying any particular airgun. I paid $93.00 shipped for mine in 2017 but then I would have gladly paid for shipping to avoid the butt plate being broken when I got it. The seller refunded $35 dollars (if I remember right) for his bad packaging and the damage it caused. I was able to repair it pretty well but it still bothers me that it was broken just because it was not handled/packed with care. But I know I still did great getting it in working order and with the magazine. Hopefully his refunding the $ for damage has and will prevent such careless packaging on any others he has sold or sells in the future.

I hear you. I got several guns "rattling" around in badly packed boxes before I added a packaging statement to all the sellers I bought from.

Try precision pellet in Pa. I had Rick reseal my 400 and he put a new safety and mag tube on it. I have used him for several virgin purchases and repairs.

Same here. Rick just rebuilt my 400 valve and sent me the rare barrel band screw that had somehow snapped while removing it. Total turnover time including shipping was 9 days. He's very willing to advise over the phone as well.

Great guy!
