New White Lettering Tin Winchester Domes ... are they 9.8gr ?
« on: January 22, 2019, 10:47:56 PM »
I have heard bad reports on these ... are they still 9.8grs or are they less ?

Airgun Depot has them saying they are 9.8grs ... Is that true ? I called Airgun Depot and they said their tins had white lettering ?

I have a bunch of the white lettered tins, came from Tractor Supply but there's nothing on the tins to say what weight they actually are

Gold lettered tin did not say either .. almost everything I have read in the past few hours now says stay away from the white lettered tins, they weigh about 2grs less than the gold lettered tins !

They do weigh less, but still shoot ok in many guns I have tried them in. But some guns liked the little bit of extra weight.

Yes, that is not just a minor change .. The gold had some weight to keep the energy going at longer ranges, I heard the new pells are lighter than the Crosman HP's from another shooter that reported there weight also.

I weighed a few  at random from the "gold & red lettered tins" and this was their weight..........

I've read that the newer ones are different, however I have no first hand knowledge.

As a side note, the old 9.7ish grain Win domes didn't shoot very accurately from my .177 Beeman R9 (has a rather loose leade), however they shot pretty good from my HW95 which has a tighter leade (6 shots, one to compensate for the shooter induced flier). I didn't adjust the scope from my CPL setting since I was only checking the grouping ability..........

From everything I have heard the gold lettered Winchester pellets were pretty darn good .. If they still made them I would buy a whole bunch of them !!!

I have some of both styles, the newer ones with the white lettering weigh 7.6 gr on my scale.
The old ones did in fact weigh 9.8 gr.   :-\

I almost bought some off of Ebay... showed the old tin and even the ad stated 9.8.
I had clicked buy,but then asked the seller a question.
Asked if they were the Gold lettered, and made in China?  He answered no, Spain, white lettering.
I canceled. Then he told me he'd shipped!
I got a hold of the staff at Ebay, and it got cancelled.

At the risk of dog piling, the tin of white lettering I tried was garbage.  Over 1” groups at 25 yards in every rifle I tried, some significantly worse.

I have almost used up the white letter tin I got for free from PA 4th free deal, great for casual plinking and break in, still have my stash of the golds if I want DRT  8) I find H&N hunter and hunter extreme the best substitute for the gold letter, but costing a little more.

For general plinking with my granddaughter they work well. I have also shot some great groups out of my HW95 with them. They aren't,t like the old ones.    Mike

Gone are the days of weighing pellets. Seems I spent more time doing that than shooting. If I can’t pick up a gun, shove a pellet into it & get above avg results I don’t bother. I may rethink this if I ever decide to shoot past 50yds. However, when this was the norm the gold labeled Winnie's were by far the most accurate. I attribute this to a couple of factors; one they had the most consistent overall weight from those tested at the time, & two, a collar on the shoulder. I believe the collar allowed this pellet to bit the rifling’s more efficiently. I do not believe the white labeled version has this feature.

I've got to think the old "gold" lettered Winnie's surely weren't "one offs" produced solely for a specific pellet gun manufacturer. I would think they are available under a different brand name and label. Anyone have a clue and memory on where our mystery Winnie's have been seen elsewhere?

The old ones were made in China for Daisy. Then GAMO bought Daisy and the pellets are now made in Spain.
I know Daisy and Winchester were in bed... Does this mean that GAMO now owns Winchester as well?
