I'm Pulling The Rest of My Hair Out !!!
« on: January 20, 2019, 02:59:13 PM »
There is a lot of slack in the cast housing cut out that the retaining pin goes in, so I added a shim to keep the whole housing forward which keeps the compression tube from sliding back on the compression stroke back as the whole unit is tight in the stamped frame against the retaining pin.

Pic Below:

Then I wrapped wire between the compression tube and the frame to extend the tube out another .040 so the piston has a little more swept volume in addition to the added swept volume created by the first mod !

Pic Below:

So now I think I'm on a roll and my velocity will increase ... well I got another 4fps ... Whoop De Do ;- (

Maybe I need to wrap the wire so it is about .070 out from the frame and not the .040 or so that it is now ?

Like the late great jazz man Mose Allison said " No I'm not discouraged, No I'm not Discouraged, No I'm not discouraged ---- But I'm Getting There"

Yes that always works for me when I get too deep into a problem and see no way around or through , taking a deep breath and a step back for a little while usually allows me to clear my head and look for alternative solutions

Well I took the gun apart and gave it two more wraps between the frame and the compression tube, had to trim about .040 off the tube length so it could fit in the housing.

The piston starts putting air in the compression chamber much sooner..... and..... and :-(

No gain in velocity at all  :-(

I just left the office to watch the Rams (hope their luck is better than mine today)  :-)

Donít call me, I may have a drink or two :-)

Yes, Yes ... The Rams win and so do the Patriots ... Should be a great Super Bowel.

I'll be back in the office in the AM playing with my problem child 880. If I can't get her going, I may replace the modified compression tube for a new one, and that will be it with this gun !!

Well got to the office early again and did some 12+ YD shooting with CPHP's,  CPH's and Daisy Pointed. They all were shooting in the 1/2" cc area and all were shooting pretty close to the same place. These three pellets do pretty good in my two re-conditioned 880's.

I will replace the modified compression tube on this gun when I get the chance, just because the mod did not work and I like the gun as close to factory if a mod is not showing big improvement.

Would a turned alum spacer that fits the compression tube,
and at the same time butt up to the casting housing work, with the dimension needed, for everything.

From your photo's I am not sure what you are attempting to do etc,
I know nothing about a 880 etc.

If you take a photo showing (separated spacing of the parts) more in this area,
would show more of what the problem is, might make a solution appear etc.

Tia,

Was going to do an aluminum spacer but the wraps of wire do a good job and are holding. The solution would be a new compression tube with a new placement of the air hole. The tube is metric in size (I forget the dimensions) but I think as I remember it is a custom size ? If anyone knows for sure please pass it on.

After more testing, the shim in the retaining pin hole does work, but I needed a thicker shim, one that kept the compression tube as forward as possible without being stopped by the compression tube detente in the frame. On this gun I got about an extra 6+ fps ... well  I'll take it !

Bubble gum ... Bailing wire ... Duct tape
If that don't work .... Super glue

Hope you get it figured out  ;)

Blacky is looking pretty good and shooting accurate as heck, I did the shim on the trigger and now my trigger pull is maybe 2 lbs with absolutely on creep or travel. I can break off a shot on a gnats head at 20 yds ... wow what a difference. The removal of the flat spring was very good and made a huge difference in pull weight, but the credit card shim put the trigger let off on another level :-  )

The addition of Geo's LDC finishes the look, and she looks pretty tough ;- )

The shim next to the retaining pin help keeps the action forward so my velocity is pretty good as compression is at its max with this gun, but still need 12 pumps for 610ish fps with 10.5 gr CPH's

I like the cc mod best too. Gives an almost match grade trigger pull.
The difference in accuracy is almost unbelievable with the right pellets after that mod.

Yes, the cc mod works very, very well indeed ! It does change this guns potential accuracy by leaps and bounds.

For more power, there is a mod that I have been thinking about for air flow, and that is to file down part of the hammer where it comes into contact with the frame upon release, allowing the valve to lift higher and allowing more air to pass threw the TP with less valve ball interference than before. This may add a few more FPS ?
