New mill finally showed up.
« on: January 19, 2019, 10:05:21 PM »
Been waiting about 2.5 months.

I sold my PM-25MV and ordered the PM-835S.

No complaints with the smaller mill, I just wanted something capable of making more substantial cuts.

I had to pull the table off to fit it through the door in my shop. Unfortunately all I've got is a single 36" door, no roll-up door.

I got her in and in position. It's tall, really tall.

Hopefully I'll finish cleaning it up and get some power on it tonight so I can break in the spindle bearings.

I've either got to find a step stool, or build something. Tool changes are going to be awkward I think.

That's a great looking mill, you make chips now..........

Question for you,
I see that you have the moveable/roller base, Shop Fox brand?

I was thinking about one, so I don't have to bend over too far,
I need 5-6" or taller to help raise mine, on my end.

Have you used this type of roller base before?

Thank you,
Don

Don,

The base is off Amazon. It's a Bora Portmate. I wouldn't recommend it for anything heavy. It is rated for 1500#, the mill is supposed to be 1400#, but it's too much for the casters on this base. I even had the 180-200# table off, and the wheels still weren't having it. I'll have to hoist the mill off the base when I get an extra hand.

I used a Shop Fox base on my PM-25MV. It worked perfectly. It raised the other mill maybe 2". If I end up with another G0704 or PM-25MV, I'll buy another Shop Fox base.

Managed to get the bearings through the break in cycle.

Got the head trammed as well.

Tomorrow I need to square the vise up, retie all the dro cables, and build a little enclosure in that corner of the shop to keep the chips in.

Should be able to make some chips tomorrow night.

Wonder why they put such a thick spacer between the column and ram? At least you won't turn into a hunchback operating it.

I ran all kinds of conventional mills during my career and always preferred machines where the table was normally at about elbow height.
