I agree, shorter is better.
The current BSA Lightning XL SE might fit the bill for you if you can find one. I have a couple and like them quite a bit.
Other than that, you might consider chopping a nice springer. I have an R9 with the barrel chopped and choked to 12 inches. It measures around 38 inches with a 6 inch brake depending how you position the brake. It's a stiff but quick cocking stroke at that length, and loud report. It was great to hunt with, but not much fun for plinking.
I found the sweet spot with a 9 inch brake for a 40 inche overall length.
