Added to the stable : .357 Slayer
« on: January 06, 2019, 09:40:26 PM »
So I've got a .357 Texan, .357 Pitbull and a WAR .357 FLEX but after reading the reviews and comments from some Slayer owners I put the money down today on one as it looks like it will fill THE VOID the others weren't capable of.

I'm hoping for useful posts from the guys that already have one on tuning tips and shooting

Carl,
You will not be disappointed with the Slayer, they are great guns. quality, handling,  good balance and shooting them is great.  No worries about the .30 cal 800fps at 215fpe either, the slayer exceeds that out of the box without tuning. I'll be watching what you come up with ammo. I have only used NSA through mine, some of your cast ammo should rock as well.

That will be my first true big bore(not the slayer) but one of the AA Rifle when he decides to bring it to market.

The slayer is awesome.  Power and accuracy are both stellar.

If you want good ammo to compare to for slayer my 142 grain is my best ammo for it followed by the 140 and 120 grain.

Congrats Carl!  I think it will become your favorite.  I'm almost done with my indoor backstop so I may be turning some screws coming up.  Mine is actually already tuned quite well with a bell curve using the NSA 142gr, but I do want to see what else can be had.

There's not suppose to be much tuning available other than a little valve dwell and some HS fine tuning, and also fill pressures of course.  So with that I'm thinking just a small increase in velocities (with a more declining string) or a slight decrease (with a larger bell curve) will be the results.  Fill pressures is another opportunity for lighter slugs/pellet tuning.

You can be sure I will but my next order needs to be packed so the USPS doesn't damaged it again.
YOU packed 'fine' but it looked like someone took a sledgehammer to it and even those sturdy boxes you use were crushed inside the main box (inside a mailer envelope which while untorn was very scuffed up) and the plastic bags popped open.
I think it was like it fell off a conveyor belt 20 feet to the ground, not a haha.
That was the 3rd time the USPS did this in like 9 or 10 orders from you
[Note I get a 50 lb order from Rotometals every three months or so and they had to stop shipping USPS because several times they delivered busted heavy duty multiple layer boxes with most of the lead missing... I have several claim actions that are 10 months (and 7 mn) old and still not resolved]

Anyway, lots of anticipation for the next 'six weeks for delivery'!   Tom Costan answered my questions (emails) and made me feel I would get good customer service if necessary {but probably would not need to}

FYI:

Hello Carl,

The Slayer's 1:26 barrel is good for 100-160 gn. bullets.  The Ideal being the 120, 140, and 142 gn from NSA; 142 is amazing in the accuracy department.  Although 160s (Matt's Bullets) seem to work I believe they are too heavy for most uses.

The Slayer loading system requires solid based slugs to operate correctly.  Deep skirted Diabolo pellets will not load past the transfer port and their skirts will be damaged when fired destroying their accuracy.

Not sure what I can do to pack better than we do.  We use good quality boxes for the slugs to be in and then place those boxes into another box and then put that box into a padded envelope.

Inside each box of slugs is foam to protect them and we put foam in between the boxes to cushion them during transport if their is too much room.  Are you saying the slugs were damaged or just the shipping boxes?  We try to pack so if the boxes are damaged the slugs are still ok.  One reason I don't use tins, they get dented and ruin pellets inside where the boxes provide much better protection.

We have not received a shipping damage report in months since we used this method so I am surprised this has been such an issue for you.  We want to make our shipping as strong as reasonably possible.  We ship our slugs like that all over the world with little to no issue.

Nick, it's nothing you did, it's totally the rough handling packages get here.
I thought I made that clear in description of your well packed three layers and it still was not enough, sorry.  I never complained then because it happens so often here, it's useless.  This is the office for a RV park and we get packages for our tenants to and I see a LOT of damaged stuff.
I guess I was saying we need extra to protect it from the USPS here in South Texas.

And yes, many slugs were actually dented against each other.  That's why I think it was dropped from some height. How could you pack against that?
The .357 110gr cup bases got it bad but the undamaged ones I sorted out shot bullet on bullet groups at 50 yards.

I'll say it again, I think your swaged bullets are the standard that everything else gets judged by and my experience is if a rifle does not shoot them well, look for an issue with the rifle.  In a way, NSA is a diagnostic tool, haha.

I agree on the customs.  We had so many problems with customs, but mostly fraud overseas, that we were going to stop all international shipping.  Instead, we only accept wire transfers which can not be reversed and if customs loses the order the customer aware it is their risk.

Nick, Wondering how your 142's can be more accurate in the Slayer than the 120"s and 140"s when it appears that the 142"s are sized to. 357 and the 120 and 140's are sized to
358.  Tom recommends. 358.  Thoughts?

When you shoot the 120 and 140 the .358 do shoot the best.  This bullet is like the "magic" pill.  It seems to shoot really well in all the guns I know about it being tested in.  It is also the best shooting slug I have in the Bulldog.  This is now one of our better selling slugs so I know people are getting good results.

As far as the size, .357 shoots good in the Slayer but not as good as .358.  I think this bullet design is well balanced, loads really nice because of it's shape and was not originally meant for the Slayer but when it was tested it out performed.

Thanks Nick!  That's music to my ears ;D  I have tried the NSA 142gr and posted the excellent results at 50 yards, which I'm sure many have seen by now.  I do have a few of the NSA 120gr, but need to get some 140gr and compare those two to the 142gr.

Couldn't stand it any longer.  I just placed an order for 100 each of the 140gr and 120gr NSA slugs (.358) to try out in the 357 Slayer.  If they are anything like the 142s they'll do and excellent job at filling my needs.

I hope someone can post the BC numbers for each.

Thanks on the BCs

I'm going to have to order more in .358 for the Slayer because everything I have is .357
{Funny, my Texan and the Pitbull prefer the .357}
I'll wait a couple weeks till you catch up and the delivery date gets closer.
