I frequently use a focusable Laser Designator for a "poor mans night vision".
In my experience, it has a lot to do with how quickly you are moving the laser around.
The key is to move smoothly and SLOWLY.
Rabbits are pretty tolerant with the laser on them.
Skunks don't spook at all.
Field rats are about 50/50.
 Coyotes spook almost instantly.

I would recommend checking your local regs to make sure using a laser is legal for game hunting? Now for non-game (rats) I have not had a problem with using a red laser along with a red LED flashlight. More of my movements & presence was a problem to scare the rats away.

I don't know about small game but the effects of a laser on a REALLY BIG cat are predictable.

Our dog does the same thing at a laser pointer.

I know that a lazer light will spook birds,
had a Parakeet that when you shined on or around him,
he would come unglued every time, even a Red colored one.   :o

I went into a Cabela's store once with a red laser pointer.  When nobody was looking, I pointed the dot at the trout in the artificial pond.

Talk about going crazy!  It looked like a piranha feeding frenzy.

Caution:  If you decide to try this at your local Cabela's some discretion may be advised.  You wouldn't want people to think your weird or something like that.

Note to self: do not use a laser when hunting tigers with my .22 pellet rifle.

LSU Alumni tend to frown on that sort of thing!  Just joking - they would probably get just as much of a laugh out of it as I did.  [My son and my paycheck went to LSU]
