Nitro piston vrs Spring

I have been looking at the Nitro and I notice on the PA web site the sound level is rated at 3 medium. Checking several other spring guns they also have a 3 medium sound level rating. So for you that own both types and can compare, is the 70% noise reduction just hype on the box or is it in the gun also? I am assuming a sub sonic fps round firing from both.

I have a titan gp in .22 and i can tell you its not 70% less, maybe 25% less maybe. Just from my 53 yr. old ears but thats how it sounds to me.Watch this video and Rick gets into this subject.

I've also watched the video above were he claims that the titan np is just as loud as metal springers. I have to disagree with him. My titan is much quieter than my metal springer.
I live in a fairly open area, so that may be the difference. He says that he is in a 'bowl'. But, if you shoot my .177 vantage and my .22 titan side by side, the titan barely makes a sound. the loudest sound that is produced is from the pellet hitting it's target.
I don't have the low-power version. Mine is the 950fps.
Is it 70% quieter? I don't know. But, for me, the difference is significant.

Thanks for the vid and opinions. After watching and reading I also went back and looked at the spec's for a Benji Trial same thing with upgrades. One being a full shroud on the barrel. Looks like PA rates the sound at 2, low medium. Must be the NP helps but with the shroud you get the best sound reduction. Maybe that's the up to 70% reduction where you can really out quiet a spring.

had a NP titan some what quite, have a r.a.m that sounded like a 22 rim fire, until i vortek tuned it,now it sound like a red rider bb gun,oh and i put a muzzle brake on it,the tune quieted the inner actions of the spring slam, the muzzle brake got it 80% quieter, much more so than the titan,

Have the Crosman NPSS in .22and it is relatively quiet. Have RWS Model (CDT turbotuned)48 in .177, 350 magnum in both .177 and (tuned).22. AA Tx200 MkIII in .22.(newest addition)
The TX200 is quieter than any of the above. The NPSS is next in line with the RWS rifles all louder than the NPSS.
As far as shooting, with only a short time with the TX200 - I prefer shooting it over the others.
The trigger difference is amazing. After shooting the TX200 the Marauder feels like a canoe paddle, and the marauder has a nice trigger.
One big difference in all is how they load. The fixed/break barrel and accuracy questions persist. For me the break barrels are quicker to load. Less fumbling as the opening is easier to get to. Especially with gloves and cold weather. Same with hot & sweaty hands. Putting the pellet into the opening in a small fixed access is just not as easy as having the barrel completely open and dropping it in. The break barrels also make using a pellet pen something worth having in .177. Line it up and pop the pellet in. Can't do that with the small opening of the fixed barrel rifles I have. Not a deal breaker but nice to know.
Again, my NPSS is quieter than the straight springers but quieter than the shrouded AA TX200 MkIII.

First of all, don't put any stock into a shroud for making a spring gun "quieter". There is very little a shroud (or an add-on moderator) will do to quieten a
spring
gun -- unless it is undergoing dieselling, or worse, detonation.
As far as noise attenuation goes, moderators and shrouds are applications for pneumatic (whether pump-up or PCP) or CO2 airguns, which all have a sharper pressure wave at the muzzle.
Most of the noise from a sub-sonic springer comes from the powerplant. Yes, Nitro-pistons (and the like) are generally quieter than a metal mainspring powerplant.
As for trans-sonic airguns, there is no way to make them quiet. A trans-sonic projectile will make a "
crack!
" whether or not there is a shroud, etc...
The full-length shrouds on guns like the Benji Trail, etc, are there because:
a) They look cool, and that drives sales, and
b) It gives a better surface for cocking (bigger diameter= more comfortable).
Nothing wrong with the shrouds, I like them, personally. Just don't think you're getting a quieter spring airgun because it's shrouded.

if you have a r.a.m,take the factory site tube off ,stick 3 rubber washers in tube[snug o/d] 3/8 i/d and push to the end of the tube, and re install the site tube back on the barrel, then shoot it ,tell me then its not much quieter, then we will talk,i know it doe,s because i tried it tonight,

I own the Crosman Venom which is same as Trail NP, and a couple NPSS nitros, and I have to say they are quieter than any RWS 34, or Gamo whisper that I have ever shot or post tuned tested. The report on these Crosman nitros are very quiet. As far as the TItan goes I have had several of them in my shop and they are no different as far as noise levels go.
In order to really test these things you need proper equipment and proper place to test them.

Hi Gene_SC
To clarify, you are saying that the Trail, Titan, NPSS are all about the same loudness? Also how much does the .177 gain in loudness over the .22?
Thank you,
Dave

I agree with Gene. I also have a Gamo Whisper and when I compare it to my .22 NPSS or my Benjomatic NP AW my Gamo is noisier than snot. I believe my nitros are so very quiet its scarey. Yet they pump .22 (14.3g) at 725 and 735fps respectively. My Gamo has its TWANG but believe me its still quieter than a RWS or Beeman.
