I would think running it without load first would be the best (with the water pump running).
The first thing I thought you were asking or comparing to is a HARD break in on a new engine that has metal piston rings.

Not like the YH pumps that have rubber Orings.

Not really sure what the right answer would be. I ran mine for about 10 minutes under no pressure before filling a rifle for it's first fill. Had it almost a year and its still running well.

I used normal breakin procedure and after second or third oil change I have found the oil colour is taking much longer to turn darker

lol youre right,,i do break in engines hard,
yong heng or similar compressors do havebrubber oring instead of metal piston rings, but without pressure or load its only the rubber of the oring suporting the piston running at very hi speed

I received a new YH(clone) a few weeks ago, and it didn't even occurred to me to break it in. In my defense, it came with no directions. Anyways, once I received my Acecare 9L carbon fiber tank, I just went ahead and filled it to 300bar. I suppose that was my compressor's break-in......I suppose, also, that that would be considered a hard break-in

well i guess so,, what i did was, break it in filling 23 and 13 ci bottles , maybe 10 -20 times in a span of 2weeks

my YH is about 2months old, so my system is not yet conclusive,, here is the first time i filled my 3liter scba 3500-4000, 2mins 50 secs

use ice in the bucket, mine doesnt cross 44c for 15-20min runs.

I gather the oil changes colour due to wear particles originating from wear in the crankshaft and piston areas.
so the it should breakin and early oil change with assist in getting rid of those minute metal particles worn off
