Mystery with old Sheridan

Hi I have a older Sheridan (thumb safety). I saw that there is a lot of slop in the connecting arm that is part of the pumping setup. The end that goes in the metal of the fore-end . It I removed the rivet and found the hole in that end of the connecting arm is 1/4" and the rivet and hole for the rivet could have never been bigger than 3/16". This is a Lot of slop. Could this have been a error in the assembly? The hole that is 1/4" is not out of round . I don't know if this should be fixed. I can do it,I just don't know why this was done this way.
Thanks

I have no clue what you are talking about. Pictures would really help. Here is the area I think you are talking about:
if that's the area. You are saying the hole is bigger than the rivet? If that's the case it's from years of pumping without being oiled much in this 50-60 years.

I think you have it. The hole in the end of the connecting piece is a 1/4" .It is not out of round like from wear . It is perfectly round. and the rivet like you have pictured is only 3/16" . The rivet in your picture is larger than the one i'm working on.
