RWS 54... accidental relationship.

i went to the Conn. show with the best intentions... I was going to downsize my collection and hopefully bring some money back to lillysmom621... I had to many guns that where just sitting there. well, i did get rid of some, but somehow i ended up with a rws 54 in .177. Not that i needed another rifle, but the sidelevers have always kinda had a spot in my heart... and for the deal, i could not pass it up.
It was the "wrong" caliber i thought... man how wrong i was. I set it up yesterday and started shooting it last night... then i went to work and came back and kept shooting it. I have put close to 400 shots through it and i am completely and uuterly in love with this rifle. It makes a little ragged hole at any distance out to 35 yards. 5 shots i can actually cover with my pinky nail. run back at the chrony, 860, 860, 860, 861, 860, etc...hold it tight? is perfect... loose? perfect... I think this is going to be the next hunter FT rig i use. It is so flat shooting is unbeleivable. I need to work on my stance (bench is ok but is nice to be able to shoot consistenly also while carrying your gun). i might even send it to get detuned and shoot a lighter pellet (8.4 maybe) at around 860ish... that should make it PCP competitive.
As per the black eye? well lillysmom621 waited for me at the door with outstretched hands... she did not appreciate the airking... ahhhh women, they'll never get it.lol

I have the 54 in .22 and it's been consistently accurate. I put a peep on it just to challenge and build my shooting skills and control. But I have a 52 in .177. I'd like to share a response I got back from Diana about pellet weight (same power plant as in the 54). Hope you ind it useful, and enjoy your 54:

Congrats! I got a 54 myself in .22. Got my wife one too and see loves it. I also have a 52 in .177. H&N Barracudas 10.6 grain shoot great. I have had my tightest groups with H&N FTT 8.6 grain. I just tuned it with JM's VRT kit. Super smooth kit @ 850fps 10.6 and 960fps 8.6.
The VRT kit in a 54 would be unbelievable!

cant take pic and shoot at the same time... wait... you are not asking me to put it down for a bit, are you?lol
yes, the jsb heavies and the crosman heavies work perfect on it ( the jsb a bit better, but the crosman are a bit faster, go figure...) but i wonder what it would be like if recoil was lessened by use of a milder spring, and shot at mid 800s with a jsb exact, or superdome? maybe it will also be quieter...

I have run out of room!!! i have been measuring every angle safely possible and the farthest shot is 43 yards... sigh... i guess i got to put the 54 away for real range duty. this rifle is the easiest springer to shot and i would go as far as saying that distances of 50 yards or less are, well, not fun. Benched, this gun will push pellets through the same hole. even on a hunting sitting position, resting the stock on my knee, the gun is able to dispatch starlings way pass 60 yards... yes, its heavy, and no, you dont want to walk around the woods with it, but perch yourself in a "position of advantage" as we said in the armor battalion, and you can touch really, really far. do we know anyone with a tuned rws 54??? i wonder if it is possible... i can't imagine not being able to trounce a tx 200 in HFT with this gun...

My .22 M54 was tuned by Ed K back in October"ish" 2005. He installed a Maccari Monolith spring with the tune. I call it my "spring powered PCP". It's crazy accurate with JSB 18.1 grain. I think the M54 is a great gun. I shot a few times, my co-workers .177 M54 many years ago ( before I got mine) and, as I remember it was very accurate. We were only shooting it @ maybe 10 or 15 yards.

my thinking is to get it to shoot smoother and therefore quieter. I would be happy with about 14 to 15 fpe...

Airgunsdaily has refurbished .177 54s with a one year warranty for #390.00 right now. Mine is a refurb'd .22, and I could not be more satisfies with it's appearance and operation. But truth be told, I reach for the 52 more often than not. I guess I like a bit of recoil, and the added challenge to be accurate with it. Don't get me wrong. I'm not as accurate with it as I am wit the 54.

yes, some have likened the 54 to shooting a pcp. It feels like some I've shot. Uncanny about how little the sight picture moves when I shoot this rifle versus that crazy dance the 52 does. But like I said, I like the feel of the recoil. It makes me concentrate on my trigger pull (trying to continue to squeeze it). Maybe one day I'll be pretty good, but the rifle is pretty darn accurate as it is. I'd guess the 52 in .22 is more accurate than it is in .177. Maybe a 48? I like side levers a lot.
