Was at the range today from 9:15am til 6:00pm and shot 400 rounds practicing with various weight bullets.

Did pretty good overall... but my first 'experimental' shot (on a 3K fill) with some 220gr SWC .452 cast bullets that were originally ment for shooting in a 1858 Remington BP revolver were surprising.
The chronograph read 1543 FPS! I thought I had felt a lot more kick and then a guy next to me said "I thought that was an air rifle but you had flame coming out the end!"

The lube used was { removed for the idiots safety } where the bullets are put in a pan and melted lube is poured over them, then a Lee cutter tube is used to extract them from the layer of congealed lube.
That means there is a fair amount of lube on the base too, but I did not bother about it - just loaded the bullet, ETC... and I think/know it dieseled when the Texan was fired!

Anyone else ever have that happen?!?! No apparent damage to the gun but it was funny after.

FYI - I know all about dieseling in airguns (years ago when I was a kid we used to do it on purpose with our Benjamin Sheridans) but honestly never considered a non-petroleum organic lube would do it! Of course on reflection I remember Rudolf Diesel used organic/vegtable oil in his engines and it was only later switched to petroleum (after his mysterious death).

I would be carefully checking the gun over, the pressure required to reach that FPE would be considerable.... NOT a good idea to try that again....

That is scary!!! Im surprised there wasnt a major failure in the system. Check all the retainers etc. before using it again.

If a stock Texan on 3000 psi with that weight bullet usually manages 400 FPE.... then logically you exerted about 9000 psi to get what you did, maybe more, as the efficiency goes down as the velocity goes up....

I would guess the gun was too close the chrony and gave a false reading. If you don't have a muffler on the gun it needs to be far from the gun or you get funky readings.

Thats over 1100 FPE and running the numbers Bobs correct it can be as high as 10k PSI Your a lucky man my friend. I hope nobody tries to repeat this in any way. Good learning lesson here.

Is it possible that some of the excess lube coming out of the end of the barrel confused the chronograph?

Chronograph was about 6 feet from the muzzle of the gun. and the gun put out a good puff of smoke about a foot around and couple feet long.

No moderator or anything, just stock Texan.

I did not shoot the Texan any more after that, just went on to shooting my Marauders n WARP (and the 1858 that the 220gr were for in the first place) and after I got home disassembled the gun completely and the only damage I have found is the small o-ring on the tip of the valve is missing and the larger O-ring is split... and the pistol grip is cracked at the screw hole. I carefully examined the frame where the barrel retention screws are with a bright light and found nothing. Looked at the barrel collars and the retainer clips and no sign of movement or distortion of the pieces.

I will say that I sure felt the recoil as hard as a medium cartridge centerfire rifle. And my right wrist STILL hurts as it jammed it pretty good.

And I should mention that it dumped the bottle basically in that one shot... it shows about 1600 on the gauge. I'm going to bleed the bottle down and disassemble the valve to check it (might as well pull the spring out while I'm at it.)

Hmm I just lubed a bunch of slugs with Tom Gaylord's wiscomb honey for the first time. Going to shoot some tomorrow. They are only .25cal but hope that dont happen lol. I use wax chain lube in my Texan never had a problem with it.

I would guess that the heaver molecular density of the STP would keep the flash point up high enough that it would not diesel. Same with the waxes.

Boy, lubing pellets, now THAT"S a can of worms on airgun forums!

Just watched a Tom Gaylord video Airgun Academy Episode 39. He would describe what you experienced as "Detonation" rather than "Dieseling"!

Well, like what happened recently in a sawmill dust explosion here in BC that lifted the roof off the building, with a fireball 100 feet in the air.... it could also be described as a "high pressure anomaly"....

Anybody know a good source for a grip that will fit the Texan besides Air Force?
I'm working on a stock but it is nowhere close to being ready to use.

I don't know how smart this post is, as a warning it's very good but in the other hand some idiot might try and replicate the conditions in this post.
I would remove the details about the substance used.

Yep, there's more than a few misguided souls on youtube that think petroleum lubes are a great way to juice up their springers, but they usually "disappear" before long!
