There is that view...which is rather popular.
Don't look for trouble.
1. Never chronograph a PCP...you'll only fustrate yourself.
2, Never shoot groups on paper...will also only fustrate yourself.
3. Remember the hits, forget the misses.

I might be confusing Peter's post with other reading tonight (e.g. the off-hand shooting thread), but I'll throw this in here.
Sometimes you just have an off day. But sometimes you have an awesome day (or maybe just one string). Case in point: I thought I'd give the 30 yard rested competition a try with my CFX. That rifle has been a killer, pulling off some great hits at 45 yards or so. (Incidentally, someone pointed out that they felt they shot better at animals and than at paper. I have found that to be the case for me too.) So I do a sight-in--wow, it is really good. So I go for the sheet, and, well, not so good.
Anyway, here's the scan. That sight-in was 0.38" center to center. 30 yards with RWS Supermags in a CFX with an aftermarket gas ram (original spring broke after 4500+ rounds), rested on a small beanbag in a pet door mounted in a window. No tuning ever done to the gun. Sorry, don't have a chrony, but acoustic measurements put it at something under 800 FPS.
Oops, now I see Peter's question was about PCPs. Oh well, enjoy it anyway. I'll try my R10 too as soon as things warm a little and I get a nice block of time. The Benjamin hollow points have done well, but testing has shown that the Air Arms diabolo field pellets might cut the group sizes in half...

I do like the stats and knowing whether my guns can repeatedly drill very small groups at least out to 50 yards. I have spent a lot of time honing my guns, tunes and skills. Working on them is just as much fun to me as shooting them. I find it more gratifying taking out pest at longer ranges knowing my guns and skills are honed to do so. I find myself often selecting the pest that are farther out instead of the ones closer in. I use to do the opposite.

We all like to think that we are excellent shots and on any given day perhaps we are. But as others have said the variables that we are contending with are enormous temperature , humidity, wind, atmospheric conditions , then we add the shooter into the mix and that is another doozie. Well rested , fatigued, stressed , eye strain how much actual trigger time ( determines form ) daily , weekly, or maybe once a month. I know that when I shoot every day I can hold my own with anybody out there but if it has been a few weeks or more it is a completely different story And yes I usually don't brag about my 5" groups at 25 yards
I also love it when I can stack ten pellets in under a dime group at 25 to 50 yards
