Disco accuracy

I have an older Benjamin Discovery in .22 cal. (bought it when the Disco was first offered for sale on PA). I have never really found a pellet for great accuracy, but have tried many weights & brands. I keep coming back to Crosman Premiers simply because they are readily available and relatively inexpensive.
I recently have been testing a new springer (RWS 34P) and since the air pump for the Disco was not working when I got the 34P I pulled the Hawke (2-7 x 32 AO) scope off the Disco and put it on the 34P unlit I could order a 4x scope.
I ended up with a couple 4x scopes (UTG & BSA both with AO), so I put the BSA on the Disco when I got the pump back from being repaired and took it to the range earlier this week to try another brand of pellet (Predator GTO). The groups (5 shot groups @ 20 yards) with the GTOs were like most groups in the past. A few shots clustered tightly, but a flier or two.


I happened to have some CPHP pellets along, so I tried them with the new 4x scope on the Disco and was pleasantly surprised!


Shot a few more groups on that fill of air, and the CPHPs and they remained about as good (1 "flier" I know I pulled slightly off on the shot), much better than any I had shot in the past. Discarding the "flier" all the groups could be covered with a dime, and that group cold still be covered with a quarter!
Not sure if it was the old Hawke scope, or if the barrel is just finally getting to the point of best accuracy potential (I've probably got only about 2,000 shots through that barrel), but I think I'll stick with this combination (gun/scope/pellets) for a while!

Always nice when you finally get the right combo after trying quite a few different pellets. Looks great now you can have fun and enjoy it!

Have you tried the H&N 14.66? I have less than 500 pellets through mine an found that this is the pellet of choice for my DISCO.

Great to see you getting better accuracy with your Discovery. My Disco shoots incredibly well with the H&N Sniper Magnum and the H&N Barracuda Hunter pellets. Its fun to find what the rifle likes to eat best.

Now I'm wondering if the old scope was part of the problem before. The H&Ns I tried in the past weren't all that great out of the Disco (The FTTs weren't too bad), but I have 4-5 different H&N pellet types on hand and I guess I should try them all again.   
(My RWS 34P seems to like crow magnums.)

Each airgun seems to be different in terms of the pellet it shoots most accurately. Then there are other variables involved that affect accuracy like the condition of the barrel leade and crown and the position of the barrel band or bands...

Barrel Band position? You think so?? My Disco used to shoot Gamo rockets super well until I disassembled it.  I have a BNM breech no shroud and TWO barrel bands.  Then those stopped grouping well and it started liking Polymag shorts.  I took it all apart and did some work again and now it loves the Gamo rockets again!  I hope it stays this way for good because the Rockets IMO are the hardest hitting pellets.  I wonder if its the position of my barrel bands??

I read about it happening to people here in the past. Some tried to keep using the same pellet, but moving the barrel bands around until it shot well with them. Trying different pellets instead like you did seems easier to me.
Maybe next time you disassemble, mark the barrel where the barrel bands are with a piece of tape or something.

Something that I did to my Disco which I think made a big difference was that I replaced the stock breech screw with a higher strength breech screw from Magnum Airpower. With the new breech screw I was able to secure the air reservoir tube to the barrel much more securely than before, and because of the added stability I was able to experiment with the use of a single barrel band instead of two. The sweet spot for the barrel band ended up being near the end of the barrel / air reservoir. Now my Disco is more accurate than it has ever been.
