So.....what did you shoot today?

I checked my kill zones on and off all day and got nothing.

However, yesterday I set a gallon milk jug cap out at ~60 yards and was able to hit it with regularity once I figured out the right hold over.

7 out of 10 shots hit it.  I was very pleased!


Nova Vista Freedom .177, Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x33, Crosman Premier 10.5 Domed brown box.

That's superb shooting IMO! Well done. Which gun(s) were you shooting?

BTW, I really don't need to read results like this----cause it makes me want a PCP!

I only have 2 and the break barrel (Fire/F4) is retired unless I decide to experiment with the MAD device.  So it was with the Nova Freedom .177.
I know grouping on a gallon milk jug lid at 60 yards is child's play for some, but for me that is doing really good!  I don't have a real bench rest, so I use a step ladder and cushions to rest the Freedom on in front, but the rear is all me.  So I am happy.  I think with a more powerful scope I could do much better as at 60 yards with the 3-9x33 Leupold, the lid was very small in the sight picture.  I am thinking at least a 12x, 16x or maybe higher, but it will be a fixed scope this time.  I never take the Leupold off of 9x, so the variable power is not necessary as long as I can still shoot rodents at about 15 yards as well.

Airsoft is taboo just like PB's on this airgun forum.  I have one airsoft gun that I've actually posted pictures of in the past but it's mainly pertaining to what got me started on modern airguns (YES PCP's) and the vintage stuff has been a lot of fun, especially during the winter.  Two more months til the airgun show

PB is Powder Burners. Could be Paint Ball because those are also on the no no list.

Well, when you tell me I realize it is OBVIOUS!  But, then again especially at the grocery store, I can look right at what I want and not see it! (sad chuckle)

Set out to shoot a 30 yard match target with the Benji Titan. Started out shooting fair, then improved with 9's and 10's then BAM it went to pot, low and left again 

I recovered from that after 2 shots and a few more 8's and 9's then once again poof low and left.

Got frustrated and quit for the day!

I swear I will never master that darn gun!

I was plinking this morning at some cat food cans. I usually put them out at about 50 yards, and typically put them on a 2x4 open end down.  If I hit one it makes a nice "tink" and flys off the 2x4.  Well one of them flew off like never before, it jumped like it had a firecracker under it.  The shot was a little low, and the pellet caught the very edge of the can, and the edge of the can actually trapped the pellet.  Thought it was pretty cool.

Raining out, again, so i decided to shoot out the garage back door at pine cones on the ground.  2400KT is sighted in at 25yds and through trial and error i found it needs only 3/4 mildot hold over to hit them at 36yds.


So, i ran out in the rain and placed a single peanut in the shell on the flagstone I've been seeing a chipmunk.  Range finder tells me it's exactly 40yds from my shooting bench so with 1 mildot holdover i let the JSB 7.87g Exact fly and no more peanut.


Not bad considering it's 68* in the garage and shooting through a steady rain.

I was plinking this morning at some cat food cans. I usually put them out at about 50 yards, and typically put them on a 2x4 open end down.  If I hit one it makes a nice "tink" and flys off the 2x4.  Well one of them flew off like never before, it jumped like it had a firecracker under it.  The shot was a little low, and the pellet caught the very edge of the can, and the edge of the can actually trapped the pellet.  Thought it was pretty cool.

That is a great shot!  Is that from the Crown?  Looks smaller than .25.  It does look like ST marks on the pellet though.

Finally got a target!  It was an easy shot, about 13 yards at low power and he was facing away from me.

I guess I should be glad that I have days like yesterday with no targets, but then I don't shoot!   And I like to shoot!

The squirrels seem to have gotten the message lately as I have not seen one in my or my neighbor's back yard in a while.

Other than walking along the top of the wooden fence on his property, where I can't shoot at them.  They have to come into the yard for me to be able to make a safe shot.

On the back porch under the gentle breeze of my ceiling fans...

Pulled out my lower grain pellets after lunch to recheck my results (Crosman Nitro Venom, .177) from yesterday, and I added a second rifle (HW95) to the comparison.

Pellets:
6.9   RWS HP
7.0   RWS Diablo Basic Wadcutter
7.0   RWS Hobby Wadcutter
7.1   H&N Excite HP
7.2   Daisy pointed
7.33 JSB Diablo
7.48 H&N Econ Wadcutter

The Crosman was not nearly as consistent with these as was the HW95. Don't guess that's a surprise to any of us. But with the Venom, the 6.9 HPs shot fairly well, along with the 7.1s, the Hobbys, and econ WCs. I was suprised by this. The HW95 shot them all very well (not the Daisy pellets though), with the 7.33s being just supremely one ragged POI. The Diablo Basic WC did not shoot quite as well as the Hobby, and neither rifle liked the Daisy pointed pellet, though it shoots quite well in my Colt SAA revolver.

I shot all but the JSB Diablos in my Colt SAA and my Beeman P17. All the pellets shot well, even the Daisy pointed pellets. Go figure.

I think the P17 tired me out way more than cocking the rifles. After a while, I had to rest the pistols to shoot. Though I am older, by golly I don't think I'm that much out of shape. The proof, however, is in the pudding. Hence, I'm back inside, with air conditioning, reading and typing responses (IOW, resting) here on the GTA.

Don't despair, I'm having the same problem (over "hunting" the same kill zone) but had the chance to kill two yesterday (last day of vacation) with one the day before. Now, the shots are getting longer, but I'm practicing more to be ready for those opportunities.

For me, plinking away at paper targets is just as fun but doesn't provide the same "rush" as when bagging a pest.

If I could shoot in my FRONT yard, there are PLENTY of targets!   I don't shoot paper (splatter targets) much anymore unless I am checking/adjusting zero.  My entire purpose for my air gun is getting rid of varmints/pests.   I tried nearly everything else, and this is the best way to control them.

Not to mention there is something really satisfying about it as well.

Thanks Brett, it was with the Crown.  I wish I could take credit for doing the shot intentionally, but really it was just an unlikely result from a near miss. (i'll take credit for nearly missing interestingly though  )   .
