The sultry thunderstormy period ended, so I put out the pellet trap for a little rifle practice, offhand standing.

Just 9 shots with the Blue Streak at a can from 35’ or a bit more. Missed one and had one flyer maybe an inch away from the rest. Looks like 7 shots grouped into a big hole less than an inch vertically and less than .75” horizontally. I had also shot one pellet into a dead tree about 65’ away earlier.

Switched to the scoped 880 because the sun had set. I moved back to about 50’. Ten pellets. The first shot hit right where I intended. Then things got weird. At least twice I didn’t hear much of a pop, though the pellets did get expelled. Based on my experience with this gun, I would’ve expected at least 9 hits on the can, and grouped decently, but unless most of them went through the hole made by the Blue Streak, that didn’t happen from what I could see. I recovered 8 of the 10 pellets, examined them, and only one of them looked like it did not hit the can OR the steel back lining of the pellet trap; it was deformed but not much. There were at least three edge shots on the can, which does not conform with how things usually go.

This gun had been shooting very well until about two sessions ago. There is still oil in the foam wiper, as seen by the sheen on my finger when I touch it. I’ll see what happens next time I use it. The only other thing I can think of is that not long ago, I had shot some felt cleaning pellets through it (three times using two pellets in line each time, as the pellet maker recommends). Also, I’ll use an unshot can or paper instead of reusing a holed one.

 After doing the RC bearing mod to my Crosman Stealth, I had to try it out, by blasting some soup cans.

Broke out the pp800r project no joy with the shimmed red dot.  Took another look at the dovetail to pic riser and the dot center-line was a good inch above the barrel.  Found out it only takes 24 pumps from 11Mpa to 20Mpa which is 7 shots.  Decided that was too much separation from the bore and put the open rear sight back on.  Then SNAFU the hand pump apparently has a leak so I'm down to the jumper and Co2 until the compressor issue gets resolved.

In the morning I shot the P3, offhand standing 33’ as usual for 60 shots (at a soda can), followed by 10 shots sitting on the ground with bent knee for support. LH was going poorly, so I did 2/3 of the shots that way instead of half. Didn’t do well overall, but it’s been more than a week since I shot the pistol, plus wind was strong enough to make the hung can do some wild hula dancing.

After dinner I brought out the 880 for 15 shots at a dead tree, the clang-a-lang can contraption, and an abused soda can placed on the ground. Distances not measured, but likely ranged from 30’ to 65’. Had two misses. To my great relief, the gun seemed OK.

I think I figured out why last night’s results seemed so strange with the 880. When I shot the Blue Streak at the target 35’ away, I gave it 3 pumps (normal for that distance, with that gun). Then when I switched to the 880 I moved back to get 50’, for which I pump 6 times. The two shots that were weak I must have absent-mindedly pumped only 3 times, as if I still were using the Blue Streak. No wonder the pop was anemic, especially because I was mentally expecting the louder sound of the Blue Streak OR the louder sound from the 880 with 6 pumps.

Must pay more attention instead of rushing to beat darkness.

I was shooting my tactical Chaser, then power wet out so I switched to the Notos with tactical light.

 The back room where the targets are was dark enough I could barely make out a target, prior to flipping the switch

Im prone to short pumping too.  As a result I tend to count out loud when I pump up a gun. The Crosman 1400 requires a peculiar pause at the top of the stroke resulting in a “1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi” count.  Get it wrong and the gun won’t pump up completely.  Conversely other Crosman’s are more powerful if pumped quickly. I don’t know what the pumping characteristics of the 880 are but Dans’ and Benjies’ pump smoothly with a definite progressive curve to the effort required.  No tricks there.
Does your 880 have a plastic pump arm or metal?

I know for a fact that if I pause at the top of the stroke for a couple of seconds I gain about 25 to 45-50 FPS.
If I quick pump it it doesn't have enough time to draw in enough air to fully fill the air pressure chamber.

Quick pump about 460 to 485 FPS. Slow pump with a pause, 531 FPS , with FrankenDaisy.

I pulled out the Crosman MK2 and was surprised that the CO2 cartridge still had pressure.   I don't recall shooting it for a month or two.  Guess the seals are good.

My 880 has a plastic arm. Pumping effort increases slightly with increased pumps, but not as much as with the Blue Streak.

I generally pause at the top of each stroke in either gun. The Sheridan manual recommends it, and it doesn’t harm the 880. Makes sense to me, same as pausing at the top of a bicycle pump stroke. It encourages full extension and maximum air intake.

That said, I have found myself rushing the pumps sometimes. I’ll try to see it as similar to “throwing the weight” in strength training: less effective.
