Gamo Urban Review
«
on:
July 10, 2017, 12:52:41 PM »
We were checking why Sportsman's Guide magazine, after sending them a review 3 times, and one email complaining about it, never wanted to publish a review we did on the Gamo Urban .22, as it is new and people need to hear about it; thus while typing Gamo Urban on the web this site came up among the firsts, so we registered and will post it here. Maybe it is useful for somebody.
We have seen lately that "official reviewers" are not far similar to the old-new Fake News Organizations....always trying to please a none existing reality for the sake of gains. In an atmosphere as such this website is a good point of contact about listening others in regards of new air-guns coming to the market. The good and the bad, because they are not free.
Thank you.

Gamo Urban Review

By no means we are "experts"; however, have been with firearms (lately with Air-guns) for some time, and KV has some gray hair already.
This is the review exactly as we sent it to Sportsman's Guide. They replied that a "third party" is the one in charge of publishing or not:
____
GAMO URBAN REVIEW
We sent first two reviews and they were never published, a waste of time; thus this extended third one after shooting with the Gamo Urban many times, for the sake of those watching the sellers-advertisers videos just talking about celebrations without mentioning some facts.
To begin with the pellet I decided to use with this rifle, is the H & N Sniper Magnum Domed 17.9 gr caliber .22. It hits hard. I have used Crosman Premiers 14.3 gr (Hollow Point and Domed) and they shoot great too (as a result you can add in comparison a + 100 fps over this one), but decided to use on this rifle mostly the Sniper one, and thus the examination done with a chronograph.
First I would like to talk about the trigger. All Gamo triggers I have tried are awful, plain said. Not just because of plastic, but they feel like from a cheap child’s gun. This is not different. Videos say the trigger is great, and so; but the reality is that it is the same of the same. I put the first stage screw on the trigger all the way in, and on the second stage screw replaced the factory 6 mm one with an 8 mm bought at Ace store. This improved it much, but later had to Loctite the first screw because it did not stay in place, coming out all of the time. After all of this, again, it improves and shoots good, but still if you try, can feel that it moves to the sides because it is narrow. Other Gamo rifles I have, replaced the trigger with a Charlie-Da-Tuna GRT-4G, which probable fit this one as well, but I have not checked.
In a Pyramid video it was showing for an 18.1 gr pellet this gun had a Sweet Spot from 2900 to 1500 psi. My review with the chronograph gave me a kind of different result, and it may be due to the pellet I am using, or they have a better quality equipment. The Sniper Magnum seems a very stable little bullet from just the first shot.
With the tank full at 3300 psi the rifle went up and down (95% of the time up) from 719 to 778 speeds (748 fps medium), on the first 33 shots. All those shots were right very accurate on the target’s center. The truth is that this rifle at least at 35 yards (zeroed) it is very much accurate. I replaced an UTG 3-9X32 mm scope I put first by a Center Point 4-16x40 mm in order to do the test. I zeroed it at 10 yards, and at 35 yards practically did not have to touch anything. Really accurate with its BSA barrel. This scope has AO-Parallax Adjustment, and that may have helped a lot to that result.
I was able to fire 50 shots with a full tank and this 17.9 gr pellet. It jammed two times, on shot #40 and #45, but probably my fault with the hammer not pulling it back all the way. From shot 34 (1900 psi) accuracy began to shift 1 inch high; thus from around 1800 to 1100 psi accuracy varied. Sometimes good-right on the center of the target, and then suddenly 1-2 inches high, but still keeping speeds from 710 to 775 fps. Last shot #50 still showed 719 speeds with 1100 psi. For an unregulated air rifle, the speed regulated itself pretty good.
The rifle can be pumped by hand easily…at least if you have 200 pounds like on this side of the river. I have a Chinese pump (eBay-$65 dollars) and the Benjamin 90cc air tank bought at Sportsman’s Guide, and both do the job of filling up this rifle with no problems. I added an extra plywood base to the hand pump for stability.
Will I recommend this rifle? Yes, but think first about the things I never took in account when decided to buy. The trigger will have to be replaced at some point, at least for me. The replacement plastic magazine’s price is a joke... $50 dollars each, thus with two extra ones (50+50=$100), you already could have bought a more expensive rifle. We even later read about the coming Umarex Gauntlet Rifle .22 with a tag price of $299, and has way more options. Gamo do not sell parts, and that is something to consider also, same with Umarex.
This little rifle with future upgrades could become a lifetime PCP.
Hopefully this helps you into decide the best for you while spending your hard earned money.

Read with interest. I really find high price magazines a deal breaker.
Not sure about the gamo parts statement. I have bought parts for my P-85 from them and I called Umerx and explained about my fiber optic sight breaking and they sent me another no questions ask.
It's been a couple of years since I got parts from Gamo but only a month for Umerx.
It is disappointing about the trigger. I hoped for better.
That is one thing I can say about the Mrods they do have a good trigger.
Well thanks for the honest review. That's the kind of thing we need in this world.

Thanks for the honest review. The trigger is the main reason I don't have one yet. I too have felt gamo triggers and hated them. I was juggling back and forth between a marauder and the urban, but with the trigger and the cost of magazines I'll probably end up with a marauder. I just hope that crosman has figured out the .22 barrels in those rifles.

Enjoyed your review, thanks for posting it. I've been looking at the Urban for quite some time now seeing as though it's reasonably priced, but the cost of the magazines combined with the fact that I really don't need another PCP has kept me from buying one. Again, thanks for the honest review.

Had one on my short list for some time. Was within a mosquito's butt of snagging one at the current WM price of $269 when I got distracted by the AirMax Varmint. I have a SynRod and love it but I have a torn rotator cuff (again) and I find the SynRod a bit heavy for running the back 40 with. I watched several reviews and I believe this maybe the most negative one yet. The trigger was mentioned in the others but was sited as tolerable. I found out about the cost of the mags later in my affair. I thought I would regret forgoing the Urban for the AMV but I'm feeling much better about my choice.

Welcome! Awesome review, thanks for posting. I've often wondered if the magazine for the Urban was the same as the Swarm. But apparently not sine you can get the Swarm mags for under $20!

Guys I have some question that I am sure some of you could know the right answer. I am doing some new things to this Gamo Urban. Added a sling, also a ‘CCOP USA 6” Picatinny Swivel Stud Mount Bipod BP-59MINI’, filled up the stock in the back with some foam
, and just ordered a GRT-4G trigger from CDT.
Once removing the stock I find the whole trigger assembly is much like the ones I replaced in other Gamos; however, as I have no experience dissembling PCP, I would like to be sure—as Gamo does not provide dissembling instructions or diagram in Gamo USA for this particular rifle—what is the best way to remove the air, and if I must remove a 100% of it. Of course shooting down the rifle is a way to put the pressure low, but I wonder if there is a better ‘humane’ way to do it, and if I can go beyond the red line the pressure gauge shows on the left side.
Thank you in advance.

If you're disassembling the gun anyways you can pull the power adjuster out and thread a solid screw/all thread to force the hammer against the exhaust pin on the valve to slowly release the air. If you are not doing any thing to the valve or not installing a regulator in the air tube there should be no reason to degas.

No, I am not adding a regulator, etc; but need to remove the plastic that covers the trigger assembly, and I have read that for some PCPs, you need to remove the air in cases like this. Do not know why, as like you mentioned I am not doing anything to the valve or related. Just wanted to be sure before dissembling.
I found a Gamo Chacal PDF file with a diagram which is the same Urban in USA, but the site is telling me about that it is too big to upload. I will try a screenshot...Thank you.

What a coincidence. Now Gamo-USA just responded my request and sent me a file showing the Gamo Urban. Basically is the same Diagram as of the Chacal, but adding or removing other parts the first ones I posted have with better colors. I will post these two as well so you could check differences. Two more screen shots.
