Anyone Else Remember These?

I have, over the years, added to the 174pc Craftsman ratchet set that dad bought me in the summer of 1973 before I started auto tech in high school. They still look virtually new. I wiped them down with an oiled rag every now and then to clean & preserve them for decades. now a roller cabinet full. I even work on the rifles with them.

I too have tools from the early 70's and I have used them a lot and they look worn but they still work great. Most of those are Craftsman, but I have a metric socket set from Japan that while worn still functions like new. I have a Sears tool box I got when I was 12 or 13, my son almost ran over it and crushed the lid but I used a body hammer and dolly on it and beat it back to shape good enough to still use it. He also got over-spray on it. The hinge is still bent a little but it opens and closes OK so that's where I stopped. It looked so bad I didn't know if I could make it usable again. My dad owned an Auto Body Shop and I did do Body work when I was a teen, but didn't care to make the tool look new again anyway. I was real good at straightening dents in cars, my favorite was VW fenders, I found the rounded metal fenders easiest to fix. I bought a 54' dodge and stripped it to the metal, fixed all the dents right de chromed it, installed a remote trunk latch, prepped it for paint and my dad repainted it with an awesome candy apple paint job. My dad was a painter in the Studebaker factory for a while, where he really got good at spray painting.

LOL, That box was pretty much a triangle in the middle when I got it back, I was not a happy camper. I don't remember why he had it at his house. He probably used it to haul off some of my tools that are MIA still. I don't loose tools but I have been too generous in loaning them.

One should never lend tools to their grown children invariably they forget to return them and then when you spot them they tell you the same thing you tell SWMBO when she spots that new AG "Oh that I have had that for several years"

I KNOW the routine! I think he "borrowed" all my brake tools and took that to carry them in.

I still have the Craftsman tool box with the barn roof lid someplace that came with that tool set dad bought me. Needs some cleanup and that metallic grey paint though. Hey, I've restored other things, including cars, so why not my tool box?

Yep, and I have one son and two daughters my girls have no interest in mechanics so I know where the tools are going, I just want then to go when I am through with them. My dad has three sons so it is a bit of a mystery where his will end up. A few years back my dad gave some of his best tools to his brother, so those are gone as far as us kids are concerned. I don't have a problem with dad giving or selling any of his stuff, it is his to do as he pleases with, he is the one that earned the money to buy them after all. My dad gave my older brother my grandpa's lathe and me a box of accessories, end mill bits and things I don't know about. I told my brother he is welcome to go through it and take everything that goes with the lathe because it makes more sense for it to all be together. I can go to his house to learn to use it but that lathe is not going to be brought to my house for anything it's not portable.

Here's a good one for y'all! Who remembers or still has these? They aren't dated, so I'm guessing 70's or 80's? Face or, " heads" has the 2 Colt pistols on the front, with Daisy. About the same size & heft of a silver dollar. Then along the bottom-face, " Spittin' Image, Guns Of The West" The back, or tails, had the same stage coach & horses, Daisy logo/ 1886 Air Rifles, Daisy Dollar, and the particular gun stamped in the middle of all that. In this case, the 1836 Paterson Colt.


  I have several more coming, 2 with the Winchester 1873, 1894, Walker Colt, Sharps, Henry, Kentucky percussion pistol, & Army Colt. Even found 2 pony express 50c tokens, one a centennial from the stop in Gothenburg, Nebraska. One of the original pony express stops!


Another on the way from a pony express relay station on the Oregon Trail. Rider looks like Buffalo Bill Cody, who himself was a pony express rider for a time;

I don't have any photos of it, but in the late 70s early 80s I was tearing down a couple of storage buildings on my grandpa's property where I was living and in the rafters I found still in the orginal wrapping and cardboard folder a brand new two man crosscut saw blade and new handles. The purchase date was August 1934 from of course, Sears and Roebucks. He bought them and stored them in rafters and forgot they were there. I still have them but the packing disintegrated with time. Evey time I see it I get chills thinking how much time I spent on the end of one of those saws with either my dad or grandpa.

My older brother & I used one of those in PA to cut trees for firewood. All we had was an antique wood stove for cooking and heating in that old plantation house with 12' sealings. It was pegged together out of solid white oak in 1853! Sat on 114 acres on top of a mountain. The Alleghany game reserve was on the other side of our property line out in the woods over the hill.
