I think I stepped in it this time...
« on: March 24, 2017, 09:56:03 PM »
In a "Jim Beam induced" moment I bid on a fugly C9 on gunbroker and NOBODY bid against me.  ::)
Low and behold I won. $70 and she is on her way to me... Seller says she shoots strong and I have a stock from a 392P of the same vintage.
Lets see what I can do for this diamond in the rough.

I know they make some kind of epoxy filler that soaks into the wood.
Then maybe a candidate for hydro dipping!

He says it does and the metal work looks in great shape. The stock was broken and repaired with some grey epoxy.
Original owner must have really slathered it on!
If it is a solid repair and I can sand off smooth I was thinking an different approach with some Ebony stain I have to mask it while I search for some decent furniture...
DANG my weak moments.

That ebony stain would look good. It probably has a lot of pigment in it, so coverage might be OK.

You might be able to get it looking pretty good with some serious sanding.  I'd consider spray-on bedliner before hydro-dipping though, the hydro-dipping thing is getting a little overdone these days.

Mr. Hoosier Daddy, since you have been cavorting with mr. james beam, I feel it is my duty to recommend Mr. Evan Williams as an alternative.  Black label (least expensive, and their flagship brand), or their white label (bottled in bond, 100 proof) are both excellent value bourbons, and IMHO are far superior to JB white.

You really think that will cover that fugly stock?
For my money... I would heavily mix that ebony with tru oil and rub it in baby.

If it was a real one I would agree with you, but since it's just a crosman ( nothing wrong with that but just not the same ) if I had that gun I think I'd spray it with blaze orange truck bed liner. Now that would be sweet, I don't know why but blaze orange and the outdoors just go together.

haha, awesome!  it does look rough, but I would reserve judgement on it until you see how it shoots.  looks are WAY secondary to performance.  Especially since you said that you have a backup stock.  My 1993 C9 is possibly the best shooting of all my benjamins and sheridans, so I would say that as long as the bore is in good shape and it shoots accurately, then you have a gem.

but since it's just a crosman

this gun is not a 'crosman' though.  it was made in racine by the same folks that made the C series streaks.

HA! Believe me, I have been "Beamed" more than once before by one of the 3 wise men... Jack, Jim, and Johnny. ;)

Yes, it's a Racine Benjamin made C9 with Serial # W074140. Billy (Flint) helped me identify it as a '92 over on his 392P, 397P, C9 info thread prior to the auction ending.
The stock I have off my '93 392P is cracked as well, that is why I replaced it.... but it was a good repair job. So, if it fits it might be put back in service until better wood is found. I am pretty hopeful on the swap fit because looking at the EVP of both they share MANY of the same parts. Almost seems this is a .20 version of my 392P internally. If so, a 39XP will broaden my possibility of finding some nice furniture for it some day.
I am thinking the ebony stain is the way I'll go if it sands out well enough. I do like my wood grain. I did NOT know you could tint Tru-Oil with stain, I have only stained the wood first then applied the Tru-Oil.  Thanks for that nugget of info Bill!
