Some of you may remember me posting about a Metal/Metal 880 that was (as a surprise) included in the shipping box that I recieved containing a gun I traded with another member. He told me he found it in the corner of a basement owned by a customer when he was doing HVAC repair. The customer said it was left behind by a previous owner and gifted it to him. He then grasiously gifted it to me.... er, I mean... Betty Lou. Ok, Ok... she just flat out stole it from me. The only thing I've done to the gun was put one of Stonykill's slicked up trigger groups in it. Guys, this dude does awesome stuff with a Daisy.
Anyhow....
I have yet to find a Daisy, or any other gun for that matter, that I can outshoot Betty Lou and that dang 880 with. 10 meters at Chinese fly paper and she is rediculously unstoppable. I've hunted high and low for another metal/metal 880 and have been unsuccesful. Closest I've come is a Ted Williams 799 and an 881. The TW was smothbore and both were way low on power. I had some success modifying an 880 straw barrel and adapting it to the TW but still no match to what Betty Lou now calls "The Dark Lady". So, as a last effort, walking thru Walmart the other day I came accross the new Daisy 880s for $39 and change. What the heck, give it a shot. I was finally able to win maybe 1 match in 3 with a few ties tossed in the middle. But I just couldn't get past that fact that I was shooting a Tammy Faye Baker.... yep, all fake and plastic. No match for the likes of "The Dark Lady".
So.... I got out my dremel, mini lathe, files and bench grinder and went to work. After what seemed to be hours of chopping, hacking and looking for runaway screws and springs, I finally squeezed the new guts from a 2016 880 into the vintage 881. Only problem is, I didn't take pictures of any part of the project.
Never fear...
After work this evening Betty Lou and I are headed back to Walmart for our bi-weekly essential shopping. She's given me the green light to put another 880 in the shopping cart. This one will come out of the box and hit the bench. It will be stripped of it's shell and stuffed into the Ted Williams. Only this time we'll take pictures of the process. I have 4 days off work for the Holiday and hopefully this one comes out as good as the 881 did.

 Good for you. Been there done that several times. Enjoy it! Now WILL you be able to outshoot Betty Lou? 

   I've never taken pics of the process either. There seem to be many slight variations on the metal 880, 881 receiver's, and all need different work done to them anyway. Apply common sense, and all comes out well.

  Been working harder than a herd of billy goats at an ISIS training camp. Freak heavy snow storm put that to a temp stop. Resting now from cleaning up the mess the snow made. 50 foot tree came down Sunday morning, took down the power drop lines and landed 4 feet from out bedroom while we were sleeping. HECK of a way to wake up.

WHOA!!!    You would think she was cooking for 3 20 year olds yesterday. I haven't seen a Thanksgiving spread like that since I WAS a 20 year old. She went the Ham route. Turkey is still in the freezer for a later date. We'll be eating leftovers for a week. She served everything in tupperware and when dinner was over she just popped the lids on and stuck it in the fridge. Pretty smart cookie there.
OK so, I got the new 880 stuffed into the Ted. Stony was spot on when he said the different variants had slight differences in the clamshells. There were things I had to do with the Ted that I didn't have to do with the 881 and vice versa. I'll point them out as I post pictures. I shot the gun against Betty Lou's M/M 880 last evening and, altho it did 1000% better, she still beat me 3 out of 5 matches. Admittedly that was largely because of me searching for that perfect pellet, getting used to the trigger and the gun settling in. Remember, this is essentially a brand new gun fresh out of the box. And I'm asking it to hit paintballs at 35 yds.
STONY !!! I'll gladly send you TWO take off triggers and any other take off parts from the 2 donor 880s for one of them slicked up triggers!! Meantime I'm going to go back thru the Daisy threads and have a look at trigger improvements. I took the flat spring out but we still have some fairly heavy pull and more creep than I want. If I'm not mistaken I can fill the indent in the safety bar and get rid of some of the creep.
The chrony will tell the truth but it feels and sounds like Ted builds slightly more pressure per stroke than the 881. Don't get me wrong, both do very well. Daisy must have been listening because neither gun needed tape to snug the barrel into the muzzle cap. I used the new muzzle cap/front sight on both.
I'm going back inside the gun this morning for a few minor tweaks that I'll talk about later but for now I'll U/L the pics and explain what I did so far.

  Yes on the safety. You render it inoperable, but it makes a darn fine, simple, trigger over trvel stop. I actually just start with an aluminum round, most often an arrow ferrel, and slowly file it, until the trigger JUST fires. go about 2 more file swipes after that, for safety concerns of a no fire, and glue the ferrel in place.

   The pre fire creep, I take care of, by removing some of the ramp on the trigger. Shortening it some.

  I have tried about every "cheat" there is to a better 880 trigger, and nothing beats just modding what Daisy gave us. None of the cheat.s..... have I found satisfactory over the long run.

Well, It ain't Big Brown but delivery to the shop was right on time. No waiting by the window.

And this is what gets tossed in the ever expanding parts bin. Again... A new 880 is $39 at Walmart. That's about the cost of a seal kit including shipping for most pumpers. And I even get a rifled barrel upgrade.

There is a notch in the top of the stock where it goes into the receiver on the new 880. The Ted and the 881 didn't have this notch. What's strange is, I had to grind the notch into the 881 stock to get it in the new guts and I didn't have to on the Ted. The sear would not engage the trigger without the notch cut into the 881 stock.

The first pic shows where the infamous flat blade spring lives and the second pic is the culprit. Removing it greatly reduces trigger pull. It's kinda like your tonsils, they are there but you really don't need them.

This pic shows a couple differences between what I needed to do on the Ted and not on the 881 and vice versa. The yellow circle shows the bb track that had to be ground away from the Ted receiver to get the valve and trigger group to clear. I didn't have to do that on the 881. The top red circle shows the place in both clam halves that I had to grind in the 881 to get the valve exhaust pin to clear. I didn't need to do this on the Ted. Without the clearance on the 881 it would valve lock and not dump more than 5 pumps. The valve would not open all the way. I don't normally over pump any gun but as a test, the Ted dumped 15 pumps with no issue. I didn't even try any more. After grinding the clearance, the 881 does as well.

The next 4 pics show the bb track removal and fitting of the valve body in the clam side. Sorry about the picture quality but I think you can see what I did. I also smoothed everything up before putting it all back together.
