Caldwell Precision Ballistic Chronograph issues
« on: November 14, 2016, 09:49:54 PM »
Okay, I broke down and bought this pro kit. Thinking it was a really good one, even though I have a Shooting Chrony Gamma and Ballistics Printer setup already. What can I say, I wanna try new items to see. :)
Got the unit in and set it up. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone and a Amazon Kindle Fire HD. I want to use either or both as my display and recorder. There was a free app to download to install on the Samsung which I did. The unit came with a long 3.5mm stereo patch cord to connect the chrony to the Samsung. Well, it didn't work. No connection or data.
Contacted their customer support and they informed me they would send me a USB cable to interconnect the Samsung AND the Kindle Fire HD to the chrony unit. And they also gave me a link on Amazon to download the free chrony app for the Kindle.
The USB cable came in. Tried on the Samsung, no go. No communication at all. I even went into the phone settings and set the USB to debug mode so it could communicate with other devices through the USB post, no help.
I was told by Charles (cca50) that the Battenfeld CS folks sent him a firmware upgrade that made the chrony work through the headphone cable. The CS folks told me that firmware was a work around and did not fix the issue. So they send the USB cable and adapter. LOL
After flashing the unit with v2.34 firmware, I was able to connect the phone to the chrony through the headphone jack. The app shows connection. BUT, it still does not read anything. I get nothing onscreen when I have activity on the chrony. So, as of this moment, I cannot get ANY connection from the chrony to the S5 through the USB port. I can get connectivity through the headphone jack but no data comes across. And the Kindle, dead since the app does not support the Fire HD tablet.
So, I have compiled all of this and sent it to Battenfeld to see what they can come up with. I'm sure some of you have this unit and have it working. Fill me in on what to do so I c an get this thing recording and sending a shot string to my computer so I can chart them.
MANY thanks AOT!!!

SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Dave, do you get a reading on the screen of the chronograph? Just not showing up on your device?

Chrony is reading and the phone SAYS it is connected to the chrony. But, I get no activity on the phone display but have activity on the chrony screen.

I know this sounds silly, but have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. If you show connection on your device it should read it. Sometimes just an uninstall/reinstall will fix these things.

Dave,

Have you tried rebooting your phone?

I remember reading something a couple months ago.  Try and see if there are settings for the usb and the headphone jack for stereo device versus headset with mic mode.  Try both modes.

There are also three usb data modes: MTP, PTP, and USB Mass Storage.  Maybe you can try them all?

I have a GS4 and a ProChrono Digital with the Bluetooth adapter.  I never had any problems with it.  Just an fyi.

If I find what I read a couple months ago I will post again.

At the risk of stepping too far off the deep end, is it possible the transmit and receive lines are incorrectly connected?

This was a common problem with RS-232 "back in the day".  I know usb is another serial protocol.  Just wondering.

Hmmm...
So, the cable they supply is no good, eh?
I have processed a RMA and send the unit back for exchange. Wish I had seen this before, I would have upgraded to the other Caldwell.
:)
Thanks Travis, will get the new patch cable ordered and have it when the new chrony arrives.

Wait. Did you buy the original kit with the eyes on the top and the LED light rainbows? Or the G2 with the frame and all? Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-G2-Ballistic-Precision-Chronograph/dp/B01B7OYNJG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466720545&sr=8-1&keywords=caldwell+g2+ballistic+precision+chronograph

No on the G2. The Pro kit was on sale at MidwayUSA so I took a chance.
Wish I had known, I might have exchanged it for the up model G2. Looks impressive.

So I DO have the same one as you.

The only thing I don't like about mine is the flimsy tripod. I wound up using my camera tripod instead. Even though my camera tripod was only $20-30 at Walmart it was still a WHALE of a lot better. And then I shot the locking mechanism off my Caldwell tripod one day while testing pellet penetration, and now can't use it at all.  :o

One of these days, I'm gonna make a shield for the display so if I ever do accidently hit it, it'll damage the shield and not total my chrony.

Other than that I like it.

Good luck on getting yours working.

Thanks Tom and Travis. Seems it depends on WHO in their CS department you communicate with. Seeing different stories from different folks. I hate that, no communication between them.
I DID place an order the cable Travis suggested.
Travis, I'm rethinking before I ship this back. I do have an option to get a refund and just buy the G2. Since you have bought/owned both, do you recommend this move? I'm mailing the Pro package back today no matter what. But will either go for an exact replacement or opt for the upgrade to G2.
And I will not use the cheesy tripod they supply. I too have a couple of semi-professional photography tripods I can use.
