Anyone know which is the actual seed here and how to plant them. I would like to try and grow them for shelter in my back yard.

The flower looking part is the cone, when it opens up the seed will be inside, best way to plant cedar and arbor vitae is look for the volunteers underneath them and just transplant them. You can start from seed but it depends on the viability of the seed for it to germinate. Hope this helps, good luck.

The saplings don't cost much at a nursery and they have a head start over seeds.

Thanks a lot guys, I supose I could go to the nursery, I just thought with all these cones available I would try my hand at sprouting my own. Don't have much of a green thumb so might be a lost cause but I did have a decent tomato crop. I check for the volunteers.

Check with your state (Natural Resources District, Dept. of Agriculture, etc.). A lot of states give them away because they're planted into shelter belts, for soil erosion......

It is usually done by cloning I think...

Go ahead and harvest when cones turn medium brown , the viable seeds will look like maple seed helicopters in miniature, , a 15 day cold stratification at 35 ish Fahrenheit in lightly dampened peat moss or clean sand will germinate shortly after taking out of the fridge, and planting in continuously moist soil . been my job for over a decade

More ideas, thanks guys, right now I am going to try germinating the seeds and maybe the cloning thing. Probably to late to get any from Natural Resources up here and I could not find any volunteers either. Not sure what kind of Cedar trees I have or if they are real Cedar or not, I have read that some species are not real Cedar trees.
Back_Roads, do I have to remove those wings on the seeds?

Those are from the Eastern White Cedar(Thuja occidentalis). It is in the cypress family(Cupressaceae). You can plant them with the wings on. Good luck!

Success, I have sprouts, I planted 18 seeds, after pulling the weak ones I have 11 left. Thanks for the help guys.

Update on my Cedars, they are still alive. I am bringing them outside during the day to get used to the outside temps and get some bright sun.

Those did great being inside, if you want as it gets warmer, transplant them to a 1 gallon container and let them grow in them for a year that way then next summer you can put them out where ever in your yard. This will give them a better chance of surviving the winter with some protection on your part.

Yeah they did pretty good, 18 hours light 6 hours dark period under a small hps grow light seemed to work well, same as I use for starting my tomatoes.
I will follow your transplant advice, I probably would have stuck them in the ground permanently this summer, your plan sounds better. Thanks.
