Yes I agree.  I started reading Motorhead and the other owners excellent review and workings with the Mutant standard and was really enjoying the read until I hit the last couple of pages.  Looks like he's a good shot with his Wildcat and pretty excited about it, but he really screwed up my read on the Mutant.


I have been waiting to reach the part about cocking the Mutant and how easy or difficult it is.  I see the picture of that heavy spring and the cocking lever mounted at the rear of the gun and am curious as to how hard or easy it is to cock it.  Thanks for any replies on the subject.

It's by far the easiest cocking gun I own.

Thanks fellas, I would not have guess that.  I have never cared for the wood stock look, but the synthetics actually look nice to me.  I'm looking for a .25 caliber gun and like the reviews on accuracy I keep seeing with the Mutants.

I'm searching for the rifle that fills two needs. I shoot air rifle silhouette so steady shouldering for off hand shooting is imperative. It's second job would be a woods walking squirrel hunter.

I find it tucks tight to the shoulder pretty well for offhand shooting, and my main use of it is a hiking/squirrel gun, works very well with a sling.

YES, THEY ARE WICKED off hand shooters being far more stable IMO than a long gun shot off hand.

I couldn't have gotten a more educated answer than one from someone who has actually shot silhouette with a mutant. Good to know. It just went up another notch on my list
I'm certain it's a hunter, it was the off hand balance I really questioned.

One more if I may. Is working the side lever a natural or comfortable movement? It seems rather far back but since I've never seen one in person, it might be great or awkward.

You have to un-shoulder just slightly, reach over action with left hand ( Shot RH w/ RH mounted lever ) and flip the lever.  Really a non issue IMO. * Mutants can have cocking lever mounted EITHER SIDE.

Cocking is VERY much like a STEYR LG110 in that lever travels @ 90% of swing effortless and picks up the hammer tension in the last @10%.
Very very smooth too.

Well, I said I'd quit but I've been thinking about this. Would it be easier for a right handed shooter to keep the lever on the left side? Instead of reaching over to work the action, the shooter would un-shoulder slightly and work the lever from the near side,and vice verse for a lefty?
Just a thought. I'm intrigued by this rifle, and not by its looks, but it's stellar performance.

Hard to put into words .... but being how ones wrist works and the pointing finger has the motion of cocking more of a wrist turn and outward motion of pointing finger in a quick motion.
Your hand is actually resting across the top of receiver doing it.
There is really NOT a grip & tug on the lever .... as you would have too if left side mounted for a RH shooter.

Seeing & doing it is pretty quick and easy.

True ... pending quality of pellet shot certainly.
High grade AA / JSB is of course most accurate, but Crosman Tin CPHP pellets also shoot great !!  ( See target posted earlier in thread )

I think you could hand Scott a piece of board and a water pipe and he would have it shooting 1/4" groups in a half hour.   

Knows how to build 'em and how to shoot 'em, that's a deadly combination.

I've been going back and forth wanting either an Edgun, Wildcat or the Mutant and after reading this entire thread I'm glad I got a Mutant! 

Scott, do you know the procedure for swapping the cocking lever over to the left side?  I haven't found a vid yet that shows someone taking that part of the breech apart.  Thanks!

Edit: Just noticed that you have a short in the case so it looks like I'm out of luck there... oh well.
