257 Condor or 308 slayer?

Nick has pretty much summed it all up but i will say a couple things.

My particular 257 is IMO, half a bench gun and half a hunting gun.  More hunting than bench.  Its very accurate and can reach waaaay out there and 500 yards is about as far as i care to shoot it.  WHY?  Because it IS NOT a FULL bench gun and accuracy at that range is not as tight as it can be.  It also ONLY has a 26-5/8" barrel so i'm roughly 100 fps slower than Doug and Nicks guns. BUT THAT'S WHAT I WANTED, A GUN I CAN TOTE AROUND AFIELD BUT STILL HAVE EXCELLENT LONG RANGE ACCURACY.

Now, can we hit soda cans at 440-500 yards? YES we can.  Can we do it with every shot?  NO WE CAN NOT.  Winds play a huge factor at that range moreso than 200 and 300.  With a coyote, you get basically ONE shot.  At 400 yards, i'm 100% certain, you will MISS the 1st shot and kick up a ton of dirt which will scare the yote.  You see, unlike a copper powder burner bullet, we don't have 3000 fps on our side nor the ultra high bc numbers of .3-.4-.5-.6.  In cast bullets in the calibers in question, we deal more with .1 and .2+ BC more often and about 1010-1050 fps MAX mostly.

Now, can we hit soda cans at 200-250 yards?  YES we can.  Can we do it every shot?  NOT EVERY BUT A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE.  Maybe miss 1-2 times out of 10 cans if that much.  Would i feel more comfortable shooting at a yote at 200 yards as opposed to 400 yards?  Oh YEAH, 100% sure I could hit a yote at 200-250 yards on the very first shot because my gun is 100% set up to make that shot with no click adjustments needed sighted in for 110 yards.  Just aim on the correct mil mark and squeeze the trigger then things go THWOCK or SPLAT!

A Lyman 257420 cast bullet at 1010 fps muzzle FPS gets out to 440 yards in 1.7 seconds which means you would have to BARK at a yote to stop him and be ready to make the shot as soon as he STOPS and LOOKS your way.  IMO, you would be even hard pressed to make a 1st shot BODY SHOT.  Trying to time a shot on spooky game just adds to the already tremendous amount of pressure involved with the shot.

Can it be done?  Sure it can.  Should it be tried?  Not until you yourself can 100% internally PROVE you can do it 100% of the time.  The 257 and 308 surely have the power at that range.  So at that range, its more up to the shooter and GUN in question than it is the rounds in question.........IMO.

I now know what I can realistically expect from one of these big bore airguns and think it's something I can use, I have messaged Doug about all the pieces I need for a conversion on a condor.

WELCOME and, You are more than welcomed.  You are also welcomed to PM me anytime if you have any sort of airgun question.  If i can't answer it, not only can other people here but i have a group of smart shooting brothas who can.

I like your caliber choices for long range shooting and I can't wait for you to get your gun and get some practice/range time in and report it back to all of us so we can share in the knowledge and excitement you will have.  Its hella fun shooting out that far, I CAN TELL YOU THAT!  When you do though, the 1st time, you will have a much better SELF EXPERIENCED idea of what can be done.

Ok so I have decided to go with the condor .257 conversion. I was looking on R&L's website and they have a regulated ninja tank for the condor,(http://www.rlairgunsupply.com/custom-shop/4500-psi-regulated-air-force-tank/) it fills to 4500psi and will regulate 3000psi or lower, should I go with this or is there a better option out there?

Ok, that makes perfect sense, if i'm using your Valve, hammer and spring what bottle do you recommend?
