Different springer design

Has anybody every come up with like a stacked tube springer? Something with like the spring and piston on the bottom. Also the piston would release and go toward the shooter, creating more of a traditional recoil. It would make the gun shorter and allow for a much longer barrel.

Webley, for many, many years.  Same mechanism as the Tempest and Hurricane pistols (and older Seniors/Juniors).  Not as efficient since the air has to turn the corner.

Not more, it would just go the other way.

The recoil will still be the same in that it will be double recoil. Just it will go opposite of a taditional springer. Instead of backward (toward your shoulder) then forward, it would go forward then backward.

Think of a bowl of jello.  You push it one way, it "recoils" back and then sets up oscillating.  Pull it sharply, it recoils the other way, then comes the oscillations.  The spring will expand/contract several times, regardless of the initial direction of recoil.

I read somewhere about a airrifle that had 2 springs that when released they apparently went toward one another & met in the middle thus canceling out recoil.Seems they where very effective & produced good power.Just don`t remember where I read this.

That is the Giss oppsing piston design, that was introduced and patented approximately 1956 maybe a little earlier. Diana used a very similar design in their 10M match guns, but 1 piston was "dummy" acting only as a counterweight, but not adding any compression. (which was ok in low powered match guns). The last true rifle to follow the Giss design, where both pistons compress air is/was the Whiscombe.

Some guns had two springs wound in opposite directions, one within the other.  No more powerful and I don't think it eliminated any recoil.  They were trying to offset the tendency for the spring to twist the gun as it decompresses (because it is wound).
