Well, so I haven't had the Sumatra out in almost 6-months. I moved, my dad had surgery, and then had a stroke, and my girlfriend also had surgery, but has recovered well, and work has been absolutely flat-out... long story short, my .22 Sumatra has been sitting in it's case, alone, in the dark for too "dang" long.

Today I finally took it out and shot it a bit, as I had gotten some new pellets and wanted to test them... the good:

this is 100yards, ~5mph crosswind left->right, 2 magazines (12 shots) hand-rest (no bags or stand, just a bench and elbow) with 14 grain H&N Sniper Light pellets, about 1/3rd power around 2500psi. You can see some Excite Dynamics that failed to penetrate the backstop -or hit the paper-, but all the Sniper Lights actually went through, 2 were off the paper just out side the group in the lower right


I'll take it.

Pellet evaluation:
H&N Baracuda Match 5.52mm 21.14gr  - excellent (as always)
newboy senior 28.6gr - meh (hit hard, but lots of fliers)
Predator Metalmags 17gr - Very Good (these group almost as tight as the Baracuda Match, but more fliers)
Excite Dynamic 12.8gr - Ok to 25 yards, meh beyond
Excite Apollo 14.5gr - OK to 25 yards, meh beyond, seem to have excellent penetration, though
H&N Sniper Light 14gr - Very Good (especially at long range, can't wait for Pyramyd to get the Sniper Magnum 18gr in stock, this looks to be an excellent performing pellet design!)

yup, slow leak from the fill port :| it held air for almost 6 months and now it has leaked down to empty in about 2 hours :/

I filled it four times from the hand pump in today's shooting, hoping the check valve would seat itself correctly again, no dice. I only have a hand pump, so maybe I'll go to the local paint-ball place and see if they have a bulk fill I can use to blast some air through it.

I too haven't shot in a while. In fact today was the first time they have been out of the safe since I needed a jacket to go outside. At least I made it to the shop to make some parts for them. I hope you get yours sealed up soon.

I too hope a jolt with some high-volume air blows it clean and gets it re-seated tight. I don't want to have to disassemble it to put in a new check valve

Hello jawzx,

Sorry to hear about your leaking fill valve...I had the same problem once upon a time due to a slow leak caused by a faulty air gauge O-ring. (saw your video clip)

Your slow air leak is probably due to a bad O-ring on the rifle's air gauge also. Here is how to cure the problem...
Take off the forearm and use a wrench to remove the air gauge by turning it counterclockwise. Once you remove the air gauge go down to your local auto parts store and purchase a new O-ring. (even if the old one looks OK to you...replace it anyway!) I prefer the Viton O-rings, but once you have the new proper sized O-ring installed on the air gauge, smear a little 100 percent pure Silicone Grease on it. It is not a good idea to use petroleum grease because it degrades the rubber O-ring over time. Then simply screw in your air gauge until it bottoms out and you are done...and your slow air leak problem should be cured.

The way to solve the problem with the check valve, and refill the air reservoir now that the slow leak is fixed, is to have someone hold the rifle vertically with the muzzle facing down while you pump air into it. (please understand that I mean hold the rifle exactly straight up and down). Rap on the area just behind the fill port with your knuckles a couple times when you start filling it and the check valve should seat itself correctly.

Just so you understand, the check valve is a brass disk that seats by gravity...there is no spring pressure to overcome. Your rifle got low on air from a slow leak...so low on air that the check valve was no longer seated correctly...which is why it is not holding air when you pump it in. I hope this helps you solve your problem with your Sumatra sir.
