light weight hammer

I seen a thread not to long ago on light weight hammers but i can't seem to find it. Can someone give me the link. I recently did the bstaley mod to my .177 Syn Rod tuned to 12 fpe. Getting 54 shots with a es of 18. I was wondering if a lighter hammer would give me a higher shot count. Thanks guys.

The light hammer for M-rods and resulting R&D was done for .177 & .22 caliber rifles using a Regulator
When action is only sipping on 1800-1900psi the valve opening & hammer requirements changed drastically allowing if so inclined, use of much reduced hammer weight.

If you want to stay at the same power level and working pressure range, would need to increase the striker spring tension when using a lighter striker.  Just a matter of force applied to the valve stem vs force holding the stem closed.

When you do the above with a lighter striker, three things seem to happen.

1.  The really small velocity variation shots  (like the 2% variation shots) increase a good bit.

2. The over all 4 or 5% velocity variation shots doesn’t increase a great deal.

3. The sweet spot pressure range gets narrower.  If it was running its best from 2900-1800psi, it might now run its best from 2800-2000 psi

So, it often works out to more efficient. Are using less air (item #3) and gaining a few shots (item #1).

If you feel like ordering a new striker (as I’d mych prefer to work on a spare  and keep the original), could lighten it and give it a try. 

Lathe works well, but considering that it only has to be the original shape at the top and bottom, could grind the sides flat with a bench grinder.  Could lose up to 30% of the weight and see a difference.

can you lighten the force of your hammer spring (compress it) to lessen the impact of the stock hammer to simulate a lighter hammer ?

Yes, if you don't mind it running at a lower pressure and earning a little less energy.
