The most accurate airguns..

Hey guys, just wondering... what method of propulsion in an airgun is considered the most consistent/accurate? I'm assuming it's one of the single pump pneumatics because of fairly precise pellet velocity but what about in more powerful guns? Are the pcp's really accurate if you have a shot string with a varied fps, as they all seem to have? Wouldn't a gas ram have one of the most consistent high energy powerplants? How consistent(fps) are the springers with high end springs? Any particular guns you guys think of as extremely accurate?
Thanks, Jeff

Jeff first off what are you wanting to do with the gun? I have found myself that pcp's are quite accurate especialy at long range cause theirs no recoil and I've made some pretty increditable shots with a pcp rifle but their a pain in ^&* to have to pump up all the time and if you shoot them all the time you'll lose your springer touch and a good springer can be very accurate, I personaly perfer a self contained rifle {springer} if you buy a good rifle and it performs well and is accurate and you have the skills to shoot it a good springer is tough to beat and their easy to work on I have found in my AG experience that their are a few rifles that work and work well for what ever you want them to, the 2 rws rifles I would concider is a 48 or 460 in .22cal any of the TX's or Pro Sports, HW80/R1's in 20cal or .22cal or HW95/R9 guns or if you can find a U.K. Webley Tommy, I know these are all hi end AG's but you get what you pay for you can buy cheaper AG's that work but if you want something for a life time these are it, I've bought lower end AG's tryin to fix'em up to perform like higher end guns and their ok but here again you get what you pay for and all the money I sepnt fixin up stuff I could have bought a nicer gun to start with, pcp's are fun but get old quick so get yourself a good springer and have some funn!

I've been looking at some incredible groups done by the marauder, the (10)shot strings were varying by as much as 35fps but at 25 yards, it was one ragged hole. The blogger said he thought the choked barrel was the reason for the olympic quality accuracy.. i guess that brings another variable into play and it sounds like a choked barrel is the way to go. Do you know mark, if the guns(springers) you mentioned are choked?
i always assumed that very precise shot string(fps) were required for one hole accuracy but that may not be the case. Anyone have a thought on that? It's probably just another variable to add into the mix.
I definitely want a self contained rifle, but as i have not tried a pcp, am not sure what the limitations versus gains amount to. Pumping and refilling sounds like it would get old quick. I have never minded cocking a springer.
The perfect gun imo would be a mix of great handling and balance, light weight, high power and one hole accuracy in a self contained powerplant. All for $99.00
Joking about the 99 buck part but that combination doesn't exist... if it does, let me know! J

lol if your looking for a bargain buy. you could always buy a cheaper rifle and tune it. I bet some of the older more experienced tuners will chime in for that but. You can make the gun shoot as if you paid mucho dinero for it.

Jeff, I have 3 Marauders but were gonna speak about the one I have that hasn't been touched from its factory settings accept I polished the bore with mothers metal ploish other than that its the way it came, I really like this gun its a.22cal and deadly accurate it will shoot a one hole group at 30yds with Crosman Copper head pellets but all the variables come in to play with this gun just like any other AG except recoil pellet drift and everything else is still there pcp are cool and fun to shoot and if your wanting to get a pcp the Marauder would a good place to start and if want to up grade the rifle with a better barrel or extended air tube Greg Davis is the man for that, my stock M-Rod I've made head shots on G-Hogs at 85yds and it droped'em on the spot and have shot starling easily 75+yds these rifles are easier to shoot longer distances more accurately but here again I've done the same things with my springers, if you just use a pcp for a long range hunter its not so bad to have to pump it up after 30 shots but plinking sessions don't last long anymore like I said the novelty of it wears of quick but all in all I still like them, its a tough choice more expence with a pcp gun and get youself a 3 stage FX pump and good scope and your good to go!

Also Jeff I have it on good authority from some well known tuners that most AG barrels are not choked, what happens is when they crimp the barrel for the front sight it tightens the bore slightly and it not a ''true choke '' the only barrels that I know of that are truely choked are Lothar Walther barrels, now thats not to say that Crosman isan't choking their M-Rod barrels or other types of pcp gun manufactures, but most spring guns I would say do not have a true choke in the barrel according to my sources.

Yup, thats what i'd found as well, the walther barrel is choked, the marauder is to. Two different articles said that crosman was as capable of building a fine barrel as walther. I'm not aware of any springers that are either. Are your marauders of the "one hole" variety?
Is it only at a certain, narrow pressure difference that they shoot well or do you truly get 30-40 shots that hit the same poi? J

For pure accuracy, the gun which produces the most consistent fps will be the most accurate. Target rifles operate in what Cardew called the "popgun phase". In a springer, that means that the piston is only forcing out the air, not creating a combustible mixture which ignites when the heat of compressed air is great enough. This allows the gun to produce a consistent velocity. Spring guns shooting in this manner are usually around 550 fps. Even single stroke pneumatics and the current pre-charged guns still work around this speed. Coupled with the diablo design, it makes them incredibly accurate at ten meters. Even in sporters shooting at longer ranges, the main thing is to maintain a constant pressure and firing cycle.
