Beeman R1 safety not working

I am new in your site and would like to thank you all in advance for any info and help you can provide in the future.
I own an older R1 that is in excellent condition except that the safety is not working properly. I have read in your forum about safety and trigger issues, to try to find the answer. The rifle fires fine and the safety will move a little bit back and forth, but the safety does not engage, either automatically or manually. Everything is original and I doubt it has been serviced in quite some time. The trigger is adjusted to 1 3/4 lb pull and seems to be working awesome. Any advice about gatting the safety to work properly would be appreciated...

Start by cocking gun slowly taking NOTE at the end of the stroke when sear grabs hold ....
Does / Is there further rearward motion of cocking handle ?
Or does handle stop right as sear grabs hold ?

* Second a note on how Rekord safeties work ...
They are a ONE WAY safety that when working correctly AUTOMATICALLY set during the cocking cycle and once pushed into fire position CAN NOT be reset unless you take cocking hand full back and reset it.

Lets start with an answer to top 2 Q's and go from there

It's possible the safety is worn/bent, lube is old or the spring is damaged. You can remove the trigger assembly and the safety will come out. Be careful the spring doesn't fly away. Clean it and apply some fresh lube and see if this helps.

Thank you very much for your replies!!! Actually after checking the cocking of it, I loosened the trigger guard rear screw and just snugged it, and pushed on the safety button back and forth and it started working fine    I guess it is time for a service....
One other question...I really like this gun but it is really heavy and since I'm older, does anyone know if they make or if there is an interchangeable plastic or artificial stock for this airgun that would make it lighter in weight? Thank you once again!!!!!

Generally the Sporter stock fitted is about light as you will find.  Nearly every after market stock will be for Field target or some other specialized discipline and likely be even heavier.

Just MAN UP ... Lol
It gets easier more you handle and shoot it ... honestly.

  At 92 you should be happy to shoot off of a bag and hit the target . I will be happy if I live that long and can complain my rifles are too heavy

The HW80/R1 is one of the heavier guns out there. You might consider selling it and getting a 95/R9. A little less power but a couple pounds lighter.

Or even an HW30 or RWS/Diana 24 for back yard type shooting. That rear TG screw should be just snug or it can cause some binding in the Rekord trigger unit.
