Leaving a gun in the sun

Hey guys just wonder en what would happen if you left a springier out in the sun will that ruin it?

I doubt it would ruin it, but it would redistribute the grease and oil they pack in the gun.

Other than that, it might harm the finish you have on the stock. But that depends on the finish.

I am sure some of the springer gurus will join this in a bit..


When I buy a military surplus rifle that is still in the cosmoline, I take it apart, and lay it in the sun on a hot day, the cosmoline just starts flowing, wipe it off, let it sit, wipe it, and repeat.

After several hours, it is ready for a good cleaning, and reassembly.

Yes there are other chemical ways to remove it, but this way works for me.

I have left a springer sit in the sun before. I dont recommend doing so without covering it up with a towel. What happened was the lubes softened to the point that they flowed more freely and migrated passed the piston seal. And you guessed it. The dieseled air detonated and sent the pellet way way super sonic. Didn't do the spring and seal much good either.  ;(

FWIW I wouldn't leave scopes sitting in the sun either. POI will wander.

I forgot and left my wife out in the sun. When I brought her in she was a red as a lobster. Seems like all the lubes dried up as well. I do not suggest it.

I leave my gun in full sun just before I shoot, it warms it up (I don't like a cold stock on my cheek)
I stopped using conventional lubes, moly and tar, etc..
My springers only dine on Krytox these days so there's no weird distribution of lubes and POI shifts.

for a short time not much damage, long periods repeatedly the sun will probably wear in or fade the finish and possible wood damage.
when I'm out shooting mine, they are either under shade or in the case with it partially open.
