I'm just getting into air guns after 45 years of standard firearms. There seems to be a lot to learn with regard to maintenance. I would like to know the basics on keeping the RWS 34 running. Seems some say to lube the air chamber, and some say "Never". I'd like to know what GTA has to say.

Post your question in German airgate and knowledgeable AG people will reply. I bought a refurb 34 compact a few months ago and just shoot it. When it starts being inaccurate I make sure all the screws are tight. If that doesn't help the barrel gets cleaned with Hoppe's #9 gun oil. Also read new to airguns in air gate section, helpful info for people new to airguns.

The 34 is a darn good rifle and the best bang for the buck in the air rifle world. Do not use chamber oil. Do not put oil in your barrel. The compression of the piston will cause a "diesel" effect and detonate which not only messes up you accuracy with wild velocity swings but can damage you gun. Clean you barrel with a patch soaked in Goo Gone (not Goof Off!). You can get it at Home Depot, very common you may already have some. After a few patches with Goo Gone start pulling dry patches until they come out clean. You want to end with a dry clean barrel. The RWS 34 is a very easy rifle to disassemble. Anyone with a screw driver and a punch can take the spring out in minutes. If you want to lube it you need to take the spring and piston out and do it properly. You can do a search for that info.

Strip it down and de-bur it. Lube with moly. It will be thousands of shots/years before it will need more lube. I would change out the seals and spring while you have it open.
