Advice for drilling for a sling?
«

Hey folks, I'm just excited for my new Weihrauch and was looking for advice on drilling the hole for the stud on my synthetic HW97kt. Anyone do this to a synthetic stock before? I was wondering if it would be better to drill the hole on the side of the stock or on the bottom part? Any pics or guideline or advice would be
greatly
appreciated. I've never done this before but if the 97 is heavy as my Trail then yes I need a sling!! The reason being this gun will be my new all-rounder since my Trail is acting up. And I'm more hunter oriented.
Thanks for any help of any sort!

That's a nice piece you have there. I was going to buy a 97KT Synthetic. It was on my "before the end of the year list" along with a few other air rifles but my health took quite a dive recently and I have also been slightly distracted by fishing,, another love and joy or my leisure life, where I have bought a bit of new gear lately. Unfortunately, that dug into my airgun funds, so the 97KT is still on the list but it more than likely wont happen this year now... My health is back and now I'm feeling almost better than new, thanks to my updated medication program, but I've temporarily put airgunning aside for a wee little while until I have been given the medical OK on certain things.
Anyway, the HW97 KT is an underlever, isn't it..??
Does that leave any room for a sling under the stock? Personally I'd have one on the underneath simply because when I had a side sling (on the left side of my air rifle at the time), the sling used to get in my way as it poked out from the side. Of course, I am right handed and the left mounted sling meant it was always facing into me when I brought the rifle up,, see what I mean. Because of the cocking arm channel cut into the stock, I had to have the sling on one side, but that was the first and last sling I ever had on any air rifle. Now, I don't have a sling at all on any of the small arsenal, even the big heavy rifles. I just carry them around, inhand...

I use a belt mounted Caddy. They are old school, I know...but very handy for carrying and getting a quick mount while hunting, and best is NO sling and hardware. Mine was made by a guy, and is still good and stiff, but they're still around. Here's a link of one so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the info GunnerAl and cool way to lug around these heavy AG's Bullit. I'm kinda iffy about drilling, as I've never drilled a hole for a stud, especially in a gun at this price.
Yeah it is an under-lever, so I found a swivel-stud set with a clamp for the cocking arm. I'll wrap a piece of electrical tape to avoid damage or scuffs from the clamp.
Maybe I'll just get that Gamo Gun Buddy or something similar
If I chicken out.... Nah I'll give the drilling a go
Just gotta make sure its in the right place though!
As for securing the screw for the stud, any suggestions on a way to really secure it? Would JB Weld work? Or is there even a need to after the hole is drilled and the screw is tightened to the nut? I don't EVER plan on selling it, so it wouldn't matter if theres a splat of JB Weld or something else on the inside of the synthetic stock securing the stud. Thanks guys!

A threaded insert will hold it. You drill the forend, (and I personally would drill rearward of the stock screws), then insert the "nutsert", or whatever brand you choose, from the inside of the slot cut of the stock. It's flanged to hold it from pulling thru. The insert draws tight as you screw in the stud. Same principle as drywall inserts you use in your home. Just that the flange goes on the backside, rather than the "appearance" side.

company called 'uncle mikes' has the sling swivels, clamps, and I think the pilots to drill the hole in the stock. Brownells too, probably others as well. I'd thread it in synthetic, but maybe apply a little bit of epoxy when I screwed the swivel mount into place. Let it cure before using it. Break barrels and under levers usually use a front clamp.

I put one on my Panther and it has held up fine. Start with a small pilot hole and then enlarge it a few times to make sure you don't damage the stock. I think I did it in 4 stages. I believe the final hole was 1 size larger than the the instructions called for. Just try to thread it and if it feels too tight enlarge it. You don't want to split the stock.

Gosh that would be awful. I'm thinking even though its synthetic, these Weihrauch stocks cost more than most Crosman and other chinese guns do for a full rifle
Well I think I'll be able to pull it off. Hopefully I'll be able to find a youtube video to follow. No luck yet. Thanks for the help guys, I'll be sure to take my time while doing this.
