i am getting ready to refinish the stock on my grandfathers old blue streak. i will put a hand rubbed satin finish on it like several others i have done. when i acquired it from my uncle, he had neglected it and the fore stock is broke. a whole corner is missing and i dont have the missing piece. should i just refinish it as is? replace the whole fore stock? or is it possible to have this piece repaired and semi matched? most of these fore stocks didnt match anyways.

Cut it down into a shape that looks good to you, and make the other side match? Call it a "lightening" job.

Do you know how it was broken? If I bought that gun I would probably replace the forearm. Being it's a family hand me down I would want to know how it was broken before I fixed it.

Mabye use wood putty mixed with stain to close coloring and sand. Just a idea

Don't sweat it too much. Just get a little piece of walnut somewhere, fit it however you can and glue it on. Shape and refinish. I've had excellent results with Waterlox, sometimes over a stain, sometimes not. Many coats with light scuffing in between, then a rubout after drying a couple days. Enjoy, tk

where that piece is missing is pretty thin and if the gun gets dropped with the lever down it will chip it off. I happened to hit my lever while working on it and chipped off a little piece I was able to glue it on. I just hope it stays put.

I would just leave it as is. I doubt a repair would last long. You could keep an eye out for a used one, but matching finish may be a problem.
