Range Report with Lyman Mold and Bullets Cast Yesterday

Was hoping that these 292 gr Lyman bullets would shoot into one hole......but that's always my goal. Perfectionist in me never goes away. Here's a typical 50 yard group today with the Extreme at 3500psi with refills after each shot. Didn't have enough air in my tank to shoot a decent 3 shot group without refilling. One thing I found out is that the gun did not like the dry moly lube on the bullets. Groups were tighter with dry bullets with no lube. The 250 gr REAL bullets still group better but I'm concerned that the pointy nose will not do enough damage on a deer. Thoughts?

I prefer bullets with a nice flat meplet like the one your using, and your for sure accurate enough for the intended purpose :-).

There are really some possible bad side effects from moly that would stop me from using it. I talked to the owner of RSI the people who make the pressure trace strain gauge setup, he told me had had at least one gun he had used moly in, good technical grade moly, that had clear damage that could be seen on a bore scope from the moly.

I wonder if you could use the lubricant that bullet swagers use, I think it is lanolin, made to not diesel when you are swaging bullets ?? Maybe just roll it on with something like a stamp pad ?

I know they say it is not a "bullet lube" but then your use is a bit different too :-).

Corbin Swage Lube forms a tough film between the die and the part being formed, and withstands very high pressures without dieseling (unlike most common oil-based lubes, which detonate at swaging pressures). It is not a "bullet lube" for shooting down the bore: it is a forming lube that serves to protect the dies and tools, extend their life and prevent corrosion when they are not being used.

Wow...thanks for the input...guess I'll stop using the moly.  Was only  trying to reduce lead buildup.  I use waxy bike chain lube on my .22 cal pellets with great results but am told that I don't want wax buildup on a big bore.  Guess for now I'll just get the Hoppes bottle out as needed.

Ray,try a light coat of "Pam" spray.Thats what I use most the time.Its thin and heat resistant to about 400 degrees.And with the Round nose bullets,I shot a 6 pt last year with the lee 220 gr conical in .456 dia out of my 909 and he only went 75 yards or so.Down side was that there was zero blood trail.All stayed inside him

I like a flat meplat over a hollowpoint , I don't lube  just a good old cleaning veral smith who knows of such things explained why a meplat wider is better , he had a convincing argument , im in process of massive casting now, just trng to buck the rain  , its been tough

PAM is just canola oil I think ??
