Do you you ever take the scenic route?

Made a 120 or so mile round trip today to see my brother-in-law and I did take the interstate to get there but on the way back as my wife and I were not in a hurry I took the regular state road ( its been awhile) .It adds about a half an hour but with all the holiday traffic on the interstate its much more relaxing. Other than the fact that winters getting closer there is something I like about this time of year, even though it was cloudy and in the high 30s. I guess it reminds me of hunting in the woods when I was young. Driving with the Sirius Christmas channel on, no traffic, The leaves are all off the trees and you can really see the hills and valleys ,all the nutter nests in the trees
patches of a dusting of snow, Christmas decorations up in the small towns we passed though, historical sites along the way. I saw 4 hawks, one was perched in a tree top and a crow was circling and harassing him but he just keep watching the ground. A flock of ducks over a river, a flock of starlings that would give you an itchy trigger finger
and the crows in the plowed fields. I guess I needed to share this as my wife is not the outdoors type LOL

Back roads are ALWAYS more enjoyable than highways - if you have the time. - I often take my 21 speed bike and go to a small town around here, and ride the country roads, even better. - Agree, this is without ANY question the best time of the year. Of course winter's are pretty good too, - snowshoeing. ...

Annie and I take a two-week road trip every spring for vacation Mount Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and the like. About 80% of our trips are on the back roads of this great country. There are allot of amazing sights in this great land of our. This year we are taking three weeks and going to Bangor Me. Shouldn't be more than 6000 miles round trip.

That sounds like a great trip Marty! I was at the grand Canyon back in '66 and went to Maine every summer for many years. God bless you John! Staying active is so important. I would still be out there if it weren't for my knees.

I too like taking the "scenic" routes. But down here in the South they represent the worst "speed traps" ever. In south Georgia, one stretch of beautiful country side has a top speed of 45 mph. And this is in the middle of nowhere. Not even a village. And in many places 4 lane. About 60 miles of nothing. So now, even though I don't like to, we travel the road to h*ll called I-95.

I do that quite often. Much more fun to see things along the way and stop at a local "dive" for lunch or whatever. Much more interesting when you have the time to do it.

The girlfriend and I do that alot. We even keep 'his' and 'hers' binos in the car. We often stop on the roadside to watch critters. And, we also keep a log book in the car to keep track of what we see and where.
It's especially fun in an 85 year old antique car where you have to go slower. Better yet if it's an open touring car. Not only get to see lots more by going slower, you can feel more in touch with the outdoors too.
Paul.
