My XL1500 is headed back to Crosman

Hey Folks,

Talked with Crosman this morning and they told me to send my Benji back to them.

I had just completed tuning it, but the barrel lockup has kept getting worse.  The lockup was so weak that the lightest push would break the barrel open.  The barrel could be wiggled slightly when it was locked, it even opened slightly a few times when fired.

They told me to put all the stock parts back on, even the seal.  I ended up ruining a basically brand new Maccari seal when I removed it.  It could have been used again, no nicks at all, other than what I did removing it.  

Its been quite an ordeal so for me so far with these XL1500's.  I'll have to see how I feel about them when I get my replacement  I may be looking at other options, maybe the XL aint for me.....we'll see.

Hate that Shawn...but glad Crosman has the best customer service in the market. I'm sure they will make it right. I have seen others post that Crosman was out of XL1500's and were subbing NPSS for them. Not sure, but be prepared. In my book, swapping for an NPSS is a plus.
Whichever way it goes Shawn, keep us posted bro.

Sent my XL back this morning.  Called customer service and they said the XL1500 was out of stock til October some time.  I was offered an NPSS.  Dont know what Im gonna do yet.  I'll see when it gets there.

definatly take the NPSS... made in america... read Genes' writeup of the NPSS.  not as powerful, but i have shot it, and they are fantastic rifles.

I have to correct myself. I'm not sure they would refund for cash shipping direct to them, but that does seem to be an option within a certain period of time from retail or a dealer. I've returned and exchange purchases to Wally a few times.

Just wanted to update you all by saying that Crosman did not refund the price of the rifle because it wasnt purchased from them.  Understandable.

Man I'm sorry to hear about that! DO NOT take the NPSS! thats not a fair trade in my opinion. if it were just a Trail NP that you were returning then i'd say "take it for sure", but I absolutely do NOT think that a NPSS is a fair trade for an XL. this is obviously just my opinion, so to everyone, including you. take it as you will.

The XL is MORE POWERFUL, thus the reason you purchased it over the NPSS/lesser powered models, correct? Why would you get a less powerful gun, when you could get a replacement, which with your own tuning exceeds stock, and the NPSS stock/tuned?

I mean... Heck, my (pos) GP does ~17flbs and was only $150... so the NPSS/NP is just how much "better," for the 100% price INCREASE, LMBO = NO. Better, certainly, but for 2x the price, laughable imo. I don't even like my GP, but I can recognize diminishing returns on your invested money. You paid for an XL, bc it's an XL in power, you should get in return what you paid for imo...

V12, the NPSS retails for $300. It is not the same gun as the Trail NP or Titan GP. It is built here in the USA and is a better gun.

The price of a gun doesn't always justify it either. a more expensive gun isn't always better or equal to another. sure seems like a lot of people really hate comments on "power" in general, like its immature or something. some people are speed freaks. why is it so taboo to want a little more power, or speed behind your pellets?

100% agreed again... the more I keep comparing the POWER of said models, the more I keep getting a satirical-attitude about it... You know like how yer Granpa used to scold you about, "son, I've been alive 100yrs blah blah..." Yeah I have engineering and scientific facts of physics behind me, so keep your advice and I'll stick with facts to get the most for my MONEY. I want an XL@1500fps bc that's what the BIG BOLD LEGALLY reviewed letters connote on the box; NOT the micro fine print deception on the bottom, "only with unstable, impractical, uncommonly used PBA ammunition."

Power Vs accuracy debate is bunk bc they BOTH require one another... Shooting an inaccurate TOE missile at a CHABUM armored tank is USLESS... and so is a 99.999 percent accurate Kalashinkov-47. POWER REQUIRES accuracy... Accuracy requires POWER to be EFFECTIVE.

Quickly… Lets break this down in terms of VALUE:

$300 NPSS Vs $150 GP… ~17FPE Vs ~23-25FPE

1)   The NPSS costs 100% more than the GP.

2)   The NPSS is ~35-50% more powerful than the GP.

3)   So 100% more for 35-50% more power?

4)   The NPSS (from my research) is more accurate@stock Vs the GP.

5)   The GP DOES (14.3gr CPHP) punch through ½” hardwood fence (lodging into another fence 5ft away afterwards) at 33m (my backyard).

6)   For $150, serious skull/bone/flesh penetrating, INACCURATE power; add in $30 for the GRT-III for accuracy, $8 for a Macarri seal, $8 for Moly, $2-5 brass spacers = ~$200 tuned, ACCURATE GUN Vs $300 stock NPSS.


Now I ask you… WHICH is the more EFFECTIVE VALUE per dollar? 33m KILLING performance… Lets hypothesize out to 40-50m = still able to penetrate a skull/ribcage = better value imo. Thus my conclusion is that folks paying 2x the price increase are NOT getting more per dollar… This does not mean that they are suckers; I myself feel like a sucker for even entertaining the possibilities of the GP. I just don’t feel that paying 2x as much equates to a gun “worth,” and performance of 2x the competitor’s price. Accurate and powerful from any gun is the goal. I don’t see paying 2-3-4x as much for a “pretty” gun as logical. A wooden spear will kill just as effectively as a carbon-fiber shafted spear if used properly. And yes I am experiencing serious cognitive-dissonance about my soon to be returned GP. If it had said mods@stock I would be “satisfied” with what I paid for… Would I want an NPSS instead = you bet, but not for $300 and requiring deburring/tuning to keep it functioning as such. Since many posters have noted about the nicks and cheap arse seals used from factory… I digress.

Thanks for the replies guys, and my apologies to the OP for the long-winded post; I’m only stirring the pot to bring up debates about the lacking quality we are receiving for hundreds of dollars spent… Ask yourselves, would you accept this kind of from-factory lapse in quality with a TV, oven, car, shoes, computer; NO! Why do we have to mod these guns to get them to perform as they are advertised—with REALISTIC pellet weights?

I really don't care about the advertised speed vs. actual, as long as my XL has substantially more power than the next one down the line- that is what I wanted and was willing to pay for it. But the fact that so many of us are finding these rifled are sold with so many of them needing serious "remodeling" is disturbing to say the least. IMO
