Eye Shine

I found this chart online to help identify animals at night time. Not sure it is completely accurate:

I am not suggesting to shoot an animal based on eye shine ID, but it might help decide whether to pursue further for good ID or leave be or maybe even run, really fast, away!

Well I've already spotted some errata there. 


I know for a fact that Bigfoot's eyes are brown.


And I noticed that vampires are listed but not zombies.

Often I've seen cat eyes shine as yellow or green. Our cat was easy to identify as one eye shined yellow and the other blue/green, I've never seen another cat eye shine mix like his locally.

As to no zombie eye shine, my best guess is they're glazed over. Although the type of zombie may make a difference, depending on what part of the world is being spoke of   

Interesting as I've never given much thought to the color of eye shine, aside from breaking up the scraps that the cat got into. Would be nice to hear input from others. Also, would the use of different color lights make a huge difference in eye shine color? Figure I'd ask before heading out with a handheld disco torch to find out

From my experience with the ones I'm familiar with, Some are correct and some are not.
It may be the light source can change the color of shine. Need to look into that.
Two I noticed spot on, Armadillo and Hog with NO shine. You can get a hogs eyes to shine if you're close enough but it is the tiniest pinprick of light

I imagine the source light and intensity will have some effect on the eye shine color.

Last evening at about 2AM I went on patrol. I scanned the immediate yard area and saw nothing but as my light flashed across the distant tree line behind the back four, there were six whitish green eyes (deer) and in a tree above them amber eyes (raccoon) and two sets of yellow eyes (coyotes) and as I turned to go inside I saw about 50 yards away a possum waddling my way and his eyes were reddish, but I knew it was a possum by the way the eyes moved. But no skunks or 'dillas so I retired.

That has opossum listed twice,  both times as mammal, I was thinking that opossum is marsupial. I seem to recall that they shine green. Deer shine light blue. Most critters shine the color of the blood that circulates in the retina,  mostly red.


I have studied light a bit.
● Incandescent light is very wide spectrum,  it includes all colors that a human can see, and many more.
● LED lights are really blue, with a little green and red tossed in, but no violet.
●Halogen, Krypton, carbon arc, etc I've not studied much. I do know that these are also very wide spectrum, but with a different spectral energy distribution.
Only colors projected by your light source can be reflected.
I think that if you want to compare notes, you must specify the light source. I use L.E.D. like most people.
I am very interested in this kind of information about the reflected eye color for each species.

I do a bit of pesting at night and I use 500 Lumen green tactical light.  Observation has shown that most of the critters I'm seeing at night don't react to the green light but several will spook at a white light.  For instance the local feral hogs don't spook at a green light.  Their eyes don't seem to glow under the green light either.  The green light turns cat's eyes emerald green and the same for possums.  The dog's eyes look yellow amber in the green light.  Owl's eyes are yellow.

Flying squirrels glow blue all over their bodies under ultra violet light.  Working on an ultraviolet tactical light for night squirrel hunting.

  Marsupials are mammals but most mammals are not marsupials.

BS on the hog eyes listed as none. Hog eyes in my area are bright blue/white. Some hogs in my area run from green and red lights but if they're not educated and are used to being near roads then you can walk up on them with white light.

You understand that I did not make that chart ? I was trying to identify some of the animals I encounter at night and so used my google-foo skills to find several charts. That particular one with the link was sort of interesting and funny.

I have not seen a big foot. No, it was the Fouke Monster that I saw  .  I ain't skeered of no Fouke Monster but those chupacabras, those are skeery. They have glowing red eyes and I want no part of messing with one of them things, no way .

I really loved the chart, it would be great to fine tune it.
They list humans as "other", along with zombies and bigfoot.


Does anyone have anything to add?
