How do you drop the intake valve down the breech keeping the brass side up?? Every time I try it the valve goes in sideways and won't rotate correctly if I try to poke it with a small dowel or piece of coat hanger. Baker Airguns just says to drop it in without indicating how to rotate it. No way will it drop in in correct position.

You can try a drop of grease on your dowel to hold it as you set it in place.  But I've used many of the factory (brass) ones and they always fall without getting stuck sideways, though it can take a number of tries to end with the right side up.  You may have dirt or debris down in the cavity causing the part to hang up.

Maybe I'll try that dab of grease on a dowel. The barrel and breach have been thoroughly cleaned and lightly oiled so no dirt there. I wonder if a touch of hot glue would work also. It would probably spin off the brass and stay stuck to the dowel.

The dowel and grease is a nice idea- maybe I'll try it. I always shook the action or redropped the valve until it landed in the right position. It does seem to land wrong side up at least 70% of the time with the drop it and hope method.

As a former tanker sometimes the word “Sheridan “ just makes me shudder.  I read the post topic and the first thought that popped into my head was “rebuilt Sheridan? Why would anyone want a rebuilt Sheridan?”
Then my brain caught up with me.  “Oh, he means the Sheridan air rifle, duh”.

On my blue streak or the benji's I've done I just dropped it in and shook up and down if things didn't land correctly.

   I was a tank mechanic & had high hopes for the M551 Sheridan, since it had the same name as my favorite air rifle. Luckily, my unit in Vietnam did not get those.

I've a dowel mounted vertically in piece of wood, I just set the valve onto it with a dab of grease, lower the breech over it, then hold the dowel as I flip the whole assembly over so that the valve will stay in place.  That keeps the valve in position and ready to thread in and tighten.

Dabs of grease are like having extra fingers when reassembling airguns, especially clamshell Crosman's. The first gun I ever resealed was an early 760. The bb selector toggle and spring gave me absolute fits. Next one somebody recommended a dab of grease...got it on the first try!
