I've always thought that the "break barrel" air rifles were not really air rifles, but crossbows disguised as rifles, opposite to the single or multi stroke pumpers.
Indeed, it is not air that's compressed when the barrel is broken but a spring, with a mass at its end equipped with a seal, that will compress some little air to expel the pellet when released.

I finally had confirmation of my delirium by discovering one of the innovations revealed at the "Shot Show" 2022. I let you contemplate, at 1mn 25s - (from the excellent Airgun Detective channel) the crank compression system supposed to facilitate the rifle cocking. I am certainly not against this new gadget but for its use, I suggest the complete panoply of the medieval soldier . Then, after a few years of practice, a private course about how to  manufacture  black powder . But as how someone said, that's another story .

IMHO break barrels/spring guns are air rifles. They use a mechanical way to build air pressure and release it, they just don't accumulate the pressure for a delayed release like pneumatic air guns. To each his own .
