I saw this in a video and liked how it seemed to work.  Thought I would share...



It works pretty good, not too long, not too heavy. 

There are several vendors/versions.  I found this one on Amazon.

Looks like a good viable option, and on the small side.  Great for cracking the plate, which is mostly what they're needed for.  Thanks for sharing!

Man, that's fancy! 😁 I use a piece of pine 1x2 whittled down and slipped inside of a short piece of schedule 40 pvc. 🤣

I took a 1 inch copper T split it down the length used a c channel and hose clamps to hold it back together. Then I took an old broken screwdriver notched it to hold and poured lead into it. It is very light soft and I use it as a hammer for other stuff besides opening my sprue and tapping pellets out. When its messed up just recast it.

Mind you its beat up because I use it as a lead hammer I am genital with my molds.

I use a hicory hammer handle.

I once used a fancy plastic/brass smacker i designed myself, no more than ø5/8" but still to heavy and "unforgiving".
Cost some decent time straightening out sprue plates that had gotten blows from slightly under level and over time had bent up. A wooden mallet hammer handle will absorb the ascew blow and save the sprue plate (at least for me).

I can definitely recognize there are many different DIY solutions that are more in line with the self sufficient aspects of casting.

In the absence of time, energy, ideas, creativity required to create a DIY solution, this little unit fits the bill for me.  it is easily held in my right hand while operating the melter valve handle.  It feels very natural when closing the sprue plate.  For ladle pouring, it fits my hand nicely with the ladle.  Basically I never put it down when casting.

You can get a different assortment using larger size T fittings.
